These two exercise videos I do every day, without fail. Plus ten minutes on an exercise bike.

No "diet" is meant to be forever. A healthy lifestyle is what's needed, meaning a variety of foods from all groups so you get the nutrients you need. Too many carbs you'll gain weight as you age, especially if they're processed and high in sugar. Too much meat without any carbs you're digestive system takes a hit, meaning it's not enough fiber to protect it, along with missing needed nutrients that veggies, grains and fruits have. You can go low carb as long as you're eating green veggies in sufficient quantities for your gut. Too much fat over a long period is not healthy. as is too much protein.

The low carb vegetables I eat are broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and bamboo. Salad greens, okra and green beans.

Rice, potatoes, carrots are banned, as are bananas. I indulge in mangoes and pineapple, a small slice of whole wheat toast for breakfast..

I usually don't eat more than 150 gm of protein in any meal.

Despite their name, air fryers are essentially mini benchtop convection ovens.

Recently, there have been growing rumblings about nasties lurking in our precious air fryers and purportedly causing serious health issues amongst its unsuspecting users.

In a previous blog, we did a deep dive into the dangers of PFAS in non-stick cookware. PFAS are a group of toxic compounds nicknamed “The Forever Chemicals” for their incredibly slow degradation rate. This means that they can linger in the environment for hundreds or even thousands of years.

PFAS chemicals have been linked to a staggeringly long list of health issues5.

A good quality cast iron pan is just as good, might take a bit longer to cook the food, but no non-stick nasties on them.

I have used one for over 60 years and am still here.

Or the type with a halogen lamp above a glass bowl will be just as healthy, a lot bigger, and you can see the food.

Watched a program on telly where they had 3 different 'qualities' of air-fryer from 50, up to 250 quid. What was the benchmark they used,,,,,,,,,,,,CHIPS. They tried to do a stir fry FOR TWO PEOPLE. Useless.

There are some higher end air fryers with full stainless interiors/baskets etc.   I’ve used the Cuisinart TOA-70 and have even cooked a 2kg tenderloin in it quite nicely.  I bought it for a guy who used to be a Chef in New Orleans and he was pretty impressed with it.  Unfortunately this was back in the US and the prices are overinflated for those models in Thailand.

Yes, stainless steel is far superior to the mostly plastic ones sold in Thailand.

If I were to get one, not that I will, but if I did, this is what I would get.

Great for a single person who doesn't want to use oil for frying. Simple to use, a bit messy to clean up, but very convenient.
A little small if you have a large family.

Terrible if you feel the taste of good oil is important when frying, or following a Keto lifestyle.

I line the base of the pan with parchment paper, put the veggies or fish directly on top and when I'm finished simply pull out the parchment paper, wipe the side walls with a towel, and I'm done. It's actually very clean and super easy to use and clean this way.

The words stir fry means exactly that. Air fryers are not designed for stir frying, it would take a very stupid person to try.

I love carbs, and it's hard to stay as lean as I usually am eating them, including grains, potatoes, carrots, rice, bananas, whole grain bread, squash , along with green and yellow veggies, fruits and lean meats and fish. Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are favorites. The only thing keeping me from being as lean as I've been all the years is getting older and working out less, at least the last year.

And Air FRYING is not that either, it is roasting or baking.

Carbs tend to give a feeling of satiety, that's why they are called comfort food. It takes will power to avoid them.

I agree, and said as much in a previous post. It's a misnomer.

I have a lot of will power, having given up many things that are either really bad for you or fattening, but giving up carbs is really hard. They taste so good. I do eat burgers without rolls sometimes, but it's hard for me to eat what's considered a portion of pasta. I love 7 qnd 13 bean soup, but only eat it occasionally. Daily oatmeal for breakfast or whole grain cereals with u8nsweetened soy, oat or almond milk. When I'm at my girlfriends, she always gives me a ton of rice, and it's hard not to eat it along with the soups or curries she makes. I could get really lean pretty quick if I wanted, as I don't let myself get too out of whack, but giving up carbs will never happen.

Yes, but the whole concept that the name of the thing is dishonest suggests to me this entire device is a scam.

It was designed to do what? Replace frying with oil? But you're not frying anything in this thing, are you?

Mini ovens have existed long before air fryers. And that stainless steel thing posted above seems more like a small oven .... the other things people are using ... made of plastic ... seem like nonsense.

And the name is completely silly ... you're not frying anything.

Here is a chef explaining why Air Fryers are bs.

https://www.twitchquotes.com/copypastas/5061

As a chef, it’s an insult to hear “air fryers are as good as frying”. Air fryers are <deleted> bull<deleted> scams and are just convection ovens with an extra fan added. Seriously, pan searing or regular baking will always be better. I swear to <deleted> Jared if I hear you compare fried chicken to air fried chicken one more time I’m gonna smack the gob out of you.

As a chef, please tell me the difference between Baking and Roasting. I know I could ask Chat or CoPilot, but I'd rather hear it from a professional. And Grilling and Broiling.

The main advantages of ( insert preferred name here ) are they are super easy to keep clean, use much less power than a conventional oven, and are ideal for small kitchens, cooking for a single person.

The name may be a scam, what they do is not.

I use a meat thermometer to ensure my food is cooked. I don't give a rat's rectum whether it is fried, roasted or baked, as long as it tastes good.

But obviously useless trying to cook a family meal.....meat, veg & sides. You need your 'big' oven to keep the stuff you've cooked, warm.

As for using less power, a 3 - 5 litre air fryer takes around 1200 - 1800 watts. Chips take a lot  longer than frying, as does chicken. You cannot cook a steak or burger in one properly.

Nah, I'll stick with my cast iron skillet on the gas ring, combo microwave, bread-making machine, which is also good for mixing cakes and dough. Then into the biggun. Try baking 8 big burger rolls in a mini oven.

Since I have never used one, I won't debate.

But I wouldn't dismiss the previous comments about plastic components causing potential health issues.

Stainless steel / cast iron are the only safe cooking surfaces, as far as I know.

Broiling is to get that extra crispiness. Looks like the air fryer does it automatically?

There is no general consensus in the scientific community that carbs are bad, so you may not need to give them up. In fact, some guys I have followed insist on keeping carbs fairly high for good health. It's hard to know who to believe though.

Except some carbs like refined white flours, pasta ... those you need to limit for sure. But they make pasta with all sorts of alternatives these days ... look for better options than the refined white flour. Maybe chickpea flour or sth.

Also, I am not a big fan of bread. I watched a video of a guy explaining how bread used to be made. It sometimes took 3 days to make bread in the old days. They would ferment it for a long time for it to be digestible. That's why now a lot of folks have gluten intolerance. A good high-quality sourdough bread might be the only close approximation to what real bread was like.

I won't give them up, and don't need to, as I've been eating healthy all my life, especially when I started working out at 17. They have nutrients protein sources don't have, and are good for your gut health, which is the most important system we have.

I've been eating pasta all my life, and allergies aside, it's a good source of energy and fiber.

Bread is also a good source of fiber, vitamins and energy, as long as you buy good bread. You can get it in the US, contrary to what some have said, many who have never been there. Europe definitely has good bread, and likely has the best variety of healthy bread available, but there are many places now in the US where you can get healthy bread, or make it yourself. The only problem I was referring to was that getting older and not moving as much, you don't need as many carbs as you did earlier in life. They are still necessary for the fiber content. You do without fiber you'll have problems.

Hardly ‘desperation.’  More like, ‘ feeling healthy. ‘
I reached my desired weight goal after the first year, but have continued with this style of eating for the next five years because my body feels better when I do.  Please, where is the desperation you see?
Periodically, I will break Ketosis for a few days, eat the things I ‘think’ I’m missing, but after 3-4 days my body starts to feel like a slug again, with joint pain creeping back in. Getting my body back into Ketosis again solves that problem . Joint pain disappears, I no longer feel bloated after meals, or need to take a nap after eating or every afternoon.
This lifestyle may only be good for 10-15 years, but that’s enough for me. 🙂

Desperation as in, unable to lose weight just eating a balanced diet so the nuclear option of keto was used

I've had both air-fryer chicken wings and regular deep fried chicken wings, the latter are far more delicious. The end result of the cooking from an air-fryer is invariably sub-standard.

The air-fryer is basically a time saver for lazy people, best case scenario, or an unaliving device in the worst case.

Ah... I see how you are using the term.

Yes! I was desperate. My waist was 12" larger than it was when I was in my 30's, and I couldn't seem to do anything about it. So I tried Keto. It worked.

Presumably you've worked out all the stretches that can help with that? such as the rag doll?

An Air Fryer is mainly there to save calories, "frying" side dishes mainly with no or just a tad of oil, so you get some of the taste oil gives without the food soaking it up. Fried food, although not healthy, does taste very good, but eating it means not only those carbs, but added fat from being fried in oil. It's a time saver if you're cooking a few side dishes, meaning you can grill burgers and while they're cooking, can "fry" potatoes in the Air fryer. You can still get the crispiness of fried foods with not near the fat calories. They save energy if you're just cooking a small meal, instead of using a regular oven. They're easy to use but have a limited capacity, and some are a challenge to clean, but the pros outweigh the cons, especially if you're cooking more than a few side dishes. This link tells a little about safety and health concerns............https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324849
