Russia hit by steepest oil price slump since the pandemic

Oil prices fell sharply in 2025, and the downward trend is expected to continue as oil-producing countries show little willingness to cut output despite weakening global demand.

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended restrictions on oil exports in an effort to limit the domestic energy crisis currently affecting the country. In December, Russian crude was sold at a discount of $20 to $30 per barrel compared with Brent crude, marking the widest price gap on record, according to Reuters data.

At the same time, Russia’s economic growth is slowing. The country’s central bank has revised its 2026 outlook downward and now expects growth to range between 0.5% and 1.5%.

Russian officers are demanding to be transferred out of Vladimir Putin’s cannon fodder frontline in Ukraine.

The signs of ill discipline and mutiny amongst Kremlin forces around Pokrovsk in Donetsk region coincides with major Ukrainian strikes on multiple targets deep in Putin’s territory as Russia today marks Orthodox Christmas Eve.

And it comes amid reports of “drunk commanders” on Russia ’s war arena in Zaporizhzhia region.

Putin - invisible so far in 2026 - is expected to appear in church for a midnight festive service tonight but he is reeling from the US arrest of his close ally Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela and major unrest in Iran, a key Moscow collaborator and war-backer.

He has also faced a New Year demand from Donald Trump to stop the killing and a US censure over his "fake" claim to the US president that Ukraine sought to assassinate him in one of his palaces.

Russian partisan group ATESH - which supports Ukraine - say Putin’s officers on the Pokrovsk front are pleading to be reposted to the “rear” to avoid death.

Sad but true. Capturing Zelenskiy takes much more time than America`s operation of capturing Maduro. Vlad should ask Donald for a piece of advice in this area.

The Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine (FIS) has issued a warning about what it says is a renewed effort by the Kremlin to derail US-mediated peace talks. Officials say the campaign blends disinformation with the risk of violent escalation, aimed at shaping public opinion inside Russia and abroad at a sensitive diplomatic moment.

The agency said the anticipated timing could coincide with Christmas celebrations observed under the Julian calendar (January 7).

Potential targets, FIS warned, could include religious buildings or other sites with strong cultural or political meaning, either inside Russia or in territories of Ukraine under Russian occupation.

To fabricate evidence implicating Kyiv, the service said fragments of Western-made strike drones could be planted at the scene, allegedly transported from active combat zones.

The UK is bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, supplying modern short- and long-range systems to protect against Russian aerial threats, according to UK Defence Journal.

These deliveries include both already-deployed Raven systems and prototypes of the long-range Gravehawk systems.

Raven: short-range rapid-response air defense

The Raven system is designed to counter drones, aircraft, and helicopters near the front lines, adapting the AIM-132 ASRAAM missile from the Royal Air Force for ground use.

The system provides a rapid-deployment capability, allowing Ukrainian forces to respond promptly to threats, though it has limited effectiveness against cruise missiles.

"Two prototype GRAVEHAWK air-defence systems have been delivered to Ukraine so far," said Minister El Carns.

Gravehawk is designed to protect strategically important Ukrainian assets from long-range Russian strikes and will become a key component in strengthening the country’s overall defense capabilities.

Ukraine is set to receive further air defense reinforcement in response to continuous strikes on its energy and critical infrastructure. The UK is sending automated turrets and missiles to counter Russian drones as part of a £600 million winter air defense package, aimed at protecting cities and strategic assets.

Ukrainian artillery units have received 26 modern Archer self-propelled howitzers from Sweden. The Armed Forces of Ukraine say the systems demonstrate high accuracy and rapid performance on the front line, according to the Embassy of Sweden in Ukraine.

The diplomatic mission noted that Ukrainian servicemen, including soldiers of the 45th Separate Artillery Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, are already using the Archer systems to strike Russian positions. The howitzer is capable of firing at ranges of up to 50 kilometers.

Russia experienced the most extensive deliberate internet outages in the world in 2025, costing its economy an estimated $11.9 billion after government-imposed restrictions on connectivity, according to a recent Top10VPN report.

These outages were not isolated blackouts triggered by events like protests, but rather part of a systemic, sustained internet control strategy that combined wide-ranging shutdowns with targeted throttling and protocol interference.

The report found that Russian authorities imposed deliberate internet restrictions for more than 37,000 hours in 2025, affecting roughly 146 million people. Essentially the entire population A key component of Russia’s approach was what has been described as the “16 KB curtain”. This refers to a throttling method that limited many Western-hosted websites to only the first 16 kilobytes of data, rendering them virtually useless despite appearing accessible.

How Russia lost $12 billion through government-ordered internet shutdown

Top10VPN’s analysis showed that deliberate internet disruptions globally cost $19.7 billion in economic output in 2025. A 156 percent increase compared with the previous year.

Russia was responsible for a majority of that total, with its losses alone nearly $12 billion.

The UK says it will develop new tactical ballistic missiles for Kyiv and put “leading-edge weapons into the hands of Ukrainians” for their fight against Russia.

Code-named “Project Nightfall”, the missiles will help boost Ukrainian firepower and be capable of striking targets deep inside Russia, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement late on Sunday.

The Nightfall missiles will carry a 200kg conventional high-explosive warhead and cost a maximum £800,000 per unit, the MoD announced, adding that it plans to produce 10 systems per month.

UK says it will develop new ballistic missile for Ukraine

The announcement came days after Russia attacked Ukraine with its new hypersonic Oreshnik missile, striking a city about 60 miles from the border of Nato member Poland, with European leaders condemning the incident as a “clear escalation” and an attempt to “instil fear”.

I would much rather have the money spent on fixing the multitude problems in the Uk rather than wasting it on weapons of war for a 'foreign' country.

Tell Putin to stop attacking a European state then.

Ukrainian 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade drone operators detected and attacked a Russian column that was attempting to break through to Pokrovsk before sunrise, disrupting the movement of Russian equipment and infantry, according to the 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Anna of Kyiv.

Pilots of the drone company of the 3rd Mechanized Battalion of the 155th Mechanized Brigade detected a Russian column moving towards Pokrovsk through the gray zone in the early morning hours.

Russian troops attempted to enter the city without detection, but were spotted by aerial surveillance.

According to the Ukrainian military, the Russian convoy was attacked immediately after it was detected. Several precision strikes were delivered on Russian vehicles and infantry, disrupting the Russians' advance.

"We found a convoy moving in the gray — before sunrise in Pokrovsk," the unit's fighters report.

The strikes were delivered deep into Russia's battle lines. According to the Ukrainian military, the operation took place 6-7 kilometers south of the line of contact, which allowed them to destroy some of the equipment before it reached their positions.

Well if you consider Ukraine a 'European state' why do you not consider the Donbas as part of that 'European state' and tell the Ukrainians to stop attacking it ??

And in any case I would still rather have my tax money spent on improving the UK instead of wasting it in a futile war against Russia in Ukraine.

Jan 12 (Reuters) - Norway said on Monday it was providing 340 million euros ($397 million) in emergency funding to support Ukraine's energy sector and help the government maintain critical services, as part of the Nordic country's wider aid to the war-torn nation in 2026.

Russian attacks have long targeted Ukraine's energy network and have become more intense in recent months at a time of plunging winter temperatures.

The Norwegian parliament late last year allocated 85 billion crowns ($8.45 billion) for aid to Ukraine, with 70 billion going to military support and 15 billion to civilian and humanitarian aid.

The civilian package allotted 4.8 billion crowns to energy security and supply, followed by 4 billion for budget support and reconstruction and 3.5 billion for humanitarian assistance, with additional funding designated for business development, civil society and governance reforms, and support for Moldova.

As you well know, the Ukrainians and the international consider the Donbas part of Ukraine, so whilst the Russians occupy it, Ukrainians target Russian ammunition depots, airport facilities used for drones, etc.

Fuel storage depots plus energy infrastructure.
