A Russian man wanted for a cryptocurrency robbery in Phuket has been arrested while attempting to flee through Koh Samui, police confirmed on 28 August.

The suspect, identified as Dmitri, 26, was apprehended at the Lipa Noi ferry terminal, after officers discovered him hiding in the back seat of a car with Prachinburi plates.

Police from Koh Samui and Surat Thani worked alongside investigators from Phuket’s Chalong Police Station and the Technology Crime Investigation Division to carry out the arrest. The operation was launched after intelligence revealed that Dmitri had boarded the 11:00 ferry from Don Sak to Koh Samui.

At around 12.50, officers intercepted the vehicle as it disembarked. Although only a foreign driver, later identified as Gleb, also Russian, was visible, a search revealed Dmitri attempting to conceal himself on the back seat of the car.

Police presented a Phuket Provincial Court warrant for robbery, with an interpreter on hand, but Dmitri declined to make any statement. He has since been transferred back to Phuket for questioning.

Investigators said Dmitri and three accomplices had lured another Russian national, Mr Alexander, to a house in Phuket on the pretext of discussing a business investment. Instead, Alexander was assaulted and forced to transfer 35,000 USDT (around 1.3 million baht) via the TRONSCAN platform.

The rest of the gang fled the country soon after, leaving Dmitri behind. Police believe Dmitri attempted to enlist the help of a Russian associate in Koh Samui to evade capture. His escape bid ended at the ferry terminal when officers tracked the car and discovered him inside.

He remains in custody while further investigations continue.
