US arms paid for by EU begin flowing to Ukraine

US weapons purchased by EU nations have begun flowing to Ukraine, the New York Times (NYT) reported on 29 August, as part of a deal reached by US President Donald Trump with his NATO counterparts earlier this summer.

The US State Department announced on Thursday that it will send 3,500 extended-range cruise missiles and GPS navigation kits to Ukraine. The $825-million price tag will be paid for by Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway. The Pentagon will provide unspecified financial assistance for the sale.

The cruise missiles can be fired from F-16 fighter jets, which will be gifted to Ukraine by Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The missiles have a range sufficient to allow Ukraine to strike targets in Crimea and inside Russia.

“It's not a game changer for Ukraine's Air Force, but it might signal that there's a productive conversation between Europeans and the Trump administration, in terms of future supply of modern equipment to Ukraine,” explained defense expert Rafael Loss of the European Council on Foreign Relations.
