A 65-year-old woman was injured when a homemade “ping-pong” bomb exploded after she mistook it for a toy and threw it to her dog in a residential community in Phra Pradaeng district, Samut Prakan.

The blast occurred at around 19:30 on 29 August, in the Wat Yothinpradit community, Samrong sub-district. Police from Samrong Tai station and rescue workers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation rushed to the scene, a two-storey house, where they found two people injured.

The victims were identified as Mr Somkuan Kamja, 43, who suffered shrapnel wounds to his shoulder and right leg and Mrs Ood Matchuwat, 65, who sustained ringing in her ears and injuries to her right leg. Both were given first aid before being taken to hospital.

Fragments of the improvised explosive device were found scattered across the floor, while a fish tank had been shattered by the force of the blast.

A neighbour, who gave her name as Sa-ard, told police she often cleaned the street and had never seen the suspicious item before. She believed it had only recently been left outside the house by local youths. Mrs Ood reportedly saw the object wrapped in tape, assumed it was a toy, and attempted to toss it to her pet dog. The device exploded instantly. At the time, Mr Somkuan had been eating at a table in front of the house and was struck directly by the shrapnel.

Residents said teenagers frequently gathered in the area at night. Some recalled previously finding bags containing firecracker components, which they believe may have been modified into homemade bombs.

Police confirmed they are now investigating to identify those responsible for leaving the explosive device. Both victims are reported to be in stable condition.

Why is ANYONE playing with explosives in Thailand, unless they're terrorists? I've literally never heard of anyone in the west playing with explosives in public.
