A funeral wake in Phatthalung descended into chaos in the early hours of the morning, when a drunken argument ended with a man being shot.

Police were alerted at around 02.50, on 31 August after reports of gunfire at the kitchen area of a local temple in Chai Buri subdistrict, Mueang district.

Officers and rescue workers arrived to find 45-year-old Mr Chatchai injured. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder, with the bullet passing through his back. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.

At the scene, investigators discovered bloodstains, a table laid with a bottle of whisky, soda water, drinking glasses and four seating places. A single 9mm shell casing was also recovered.

According to Mr Chatchai, who was intoxicated at the time, he had been drinking with three friends when a heated quarrel broke out with one of them, identified only as Mr Chet. The dispute quickly escalated, with Mr Chet allegedly drawing a pistol, striking Chatchai in the face and then firing a single shot before fleeing the temple grounds.

Despite his injuries, Mr Chatchai managed to ride his motorcycle to his nearby home, where his sister raised the alarm with the village headman and local rescue volunteers.

Police believe the shooting stemmed from a drunken altercation, but say they will take a detailed statement once the victim has fully sobered up and recovered. Efforts are now under way to locate the suspect and bring him to justice.

Well  I have known a few Irish wakes get lively but not the usually subdued Thai funerals, only the coffin gets hot.
