The temporary reopening of the Khlong Luek checkpoint to Cambodia has been cut short by Thai immigration authorities after just one day, stirring up controversy and scepticism. The crossing in Sa Kaeo, initially announced to open twice a week, is intended to help stranded Thais and Cambodians return home. However, the abrupt closure after Sunday's opening has sparked rumours of ulterior motives.

Locals and media have expressed concern over the decision, questioning whether the reopening served as an invitation for gamblers and online scammers to cross over. The Khlong Luek checkpoint, crucial for trade and travel, was unexpectedly closed again, supposedly to maintain security amid ongoing border tensions. The swift closure statement promised that Sunday would be the last chance for any crossings.

Critics suspect the reopening may have been a gateway for those seeking casino thrills at Poipet or employment at scam centres. The abrupt move left many wondering if security protocols were overlooked. The army and navy's seal-off following deadly skirmishes highlights the fragile state of Thai-Cambodian relations, raising concerns over border control, reported the Bangkok Post.

The Sa Kaeo immigration office has denied any hidden agenda, insisting on the benevolent intention of repatriating citizens. Yet, questions remain over who authorised the opening, as the Special Operations Centre for Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Management has denied any involvement. The absence of military approval has left both locals and authorities puzzled.

As trade and essential goods flow through this critical checkpoint, the hasty decisions have left many in uncertainty. With ongoing tensions, the reasons behind this diplomatic hiccup remain unclear. As it stands, the border stays firmly shut, maintaining the status quo amid security concerns.
