A joint force of soldiers, police and local officials have intercepted a pickup truck smuggling illicit cigarettes worth more than ฿4 million through Thong Pha Phum district, Kanchanaburi.

At 00.30 on 4 September, troops from the Lat Ya Task Force under the Surasi Force, led by Maj Gen Atsadawut Panyarachun, joined Border Patrol Police Company 135, Thong Pha Phum police and district officials in setting up a checkpoint at the Thong Pha Phum junction in Ban Tha Khanun. The operation followed intelligence that a shipment of contraband cigarettes would pass through the area.

Officers stopped a suspicious pickup truck with Ayutthaya plates travelling from Sangkhla Buri towards Kanchanaburi town. The driver, Mr Boonchu, 33, appeared nervous and a search of the covered rear compartment revealed a large haul of untaxed cigarettes.

The seizure included 450 cartons of Krong Thip brand and 200 packs of Myanmar-made Chaiyo cigarettes, with an estimated excise value of around ฿4 million.

During questioning, Boonchu admitted he had been paid ฿18,000 by an unknown individual to deliver the load to central Kanchanaburi for distribution.

He was arrested at the scene and, along with the contraband, handed over to Thong Pha Phum Police Station. Authorities said he faces prosecution under excise and smuggling laws.
