Hà Nội witnessed an extraordinary spectacle as Vietnam marked its 80th National Day with what has been described as the largest military parade in decades. Crowds filled the capital days ahead, camping out to secure prime viewing positions for the historic event.

Onlookers were treated to a dazzling display of military might and national pride. Troops marched in precise columns, followed by an impressive array of tanks, armoured vehicles, and missile systems. Overhead, helicopters carried enormous Vietnamese flags, flanked by jets cutting through the sky, while a military band provided the stirring soundtrack.

The participation was vast, with nearly 16,000 soldiers involved. Adding a new dimension to the celebration was a televised naval parade off the coast of Cam Ranh, featuring cutting-edge warships, submarines, helicopters, and sea planes. Honour guards from China, Russia, Laos, and Cambodia joined the display, showcasing Vietnam's international friendships.

In his address, Vietnamese Party General Secretary Tô Lâm paid homage to the sacrifices made during the fight for independence and outlined the Communist Party's vision for the future. By 2045, the goal is for Vietnam to become a "powerful, prosperous, and happy nation," a pledge described as resonating deeply with the nation’s collective aspiration.

The event didn't just draw crowds at home. International media, including The Independent and several Thai outlets, extensively covered the celebrations. They highlighted Vietnam's remarkable transformation since the late 1980s when it began opening its economy. Now a significant manufacturing hub, Vietnam produces electronics, textiles, and footwear for global giants like Samsung and Nike. This economic shift contributes to diminishing poverty and a burgeoning middle class.

However, challenges loom. Rapid economic growth demands substantial reforms, and Vietnam must navigate an ageing population, climate change risks, and pressure from US trade policies.

Media throughout Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, echoed the scale and jubilant spirit of the day. Reports from Thai publications like Thairath and Bangkok Biz News emphasised the vibrant atmosphere, with streets lined with enthusiastic citizens.

Thailand’s coverage also underscored the military parade's significance and Vietnam's commitment to its sovereignty and independence, themes strongly echoed in General Secretary Tô Lâm’s speech.

In a nod to its growing diplomatic stature, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent a congratulatory message, recognising Vietnam as a key player in the Indo-Pacific and an essential partner in tackling global challenges.

As Vietnam reflects on its past and looks ahead, the grand celebrations symbolise not just its historical journey but its aspirations for the future. The military parade and associated festivities poignantly captured the nation’s pride, resilience, and readiness to embrace new challenges.

Such events spotlight Vietnam's vibrant national spirit and its position within the broader international context, reinforcing its evolving role on the world stage. The focus now turns to achieving the ambitious goals set out by the leadership, firmly rooted in the aspirations shared nationwide.
