Authorities in Chiang Rai have arrested the abbot of a well-known forest monastery after reports emerged that he had been drinking heavily and bringing a woman into his quarters, behaviour that has reportedly outraged the local community.

The joint operation involved members of the monastic order, local administrative officials and police from Mae Lao district. They carried out a raid on the monastery, located in a remote forested area of Dong Mada subdistrict, following repeated complaints from villagers about the abbot’s conduct.

During the inspection, officers found the abbot partially dressed in his monastic robes. A woman was discovered hiding behind a refrigerator in the abbot’s living quarters. Both were taken in for questioning.

Preliminary interviews revealed that the abbot and the woman denied any wrongdoing. The woman claimed she had been outside the bedroom but panicked and hid when police arrived. An alcohol test on the abbot revealed a very high blood alcohol level, though he attempted to claim the device was faulty.

Following the incident, the district monastic authorities ruled that the abbot could no longer remain at the monastery. According to monastic discipline, his behaviour is considered “worldly misconduct” and subject to censure. The abbot has been given the choice to either relinquish his monastic status or continue elsewhere.

This case has drawn significant attention for highlighting breaches of monastic rules and the challenges of maintaining discipline within secluded religious communities.

How can they give him the choice to continue being a monk in another place? They should have disrobed him and removed him from the temple and from being a monk. His behavior would only be repeated in another temple.

And the Bad Monk Saga continues.........

Chapter 101.
