In a heartbreaking incident on Saturday, a devoted volunteer rescue worker tragically drowned while attempting to install a safety barricade to shield locals from flash floods in Nakhon Ratchasima. The 26-year-old, named Theerawat, was part of a team striving to protect villagers from the surging waters.

The unfortunate event unfolded on September 7 in Ban Sap Charoen, Mueang district. Alerted by the incident, police from Sikhiu Police Station coordinated with the Hook 31 Korat rescue volunteers, including an expert underwater unit, to commence the search operation for Theerawat, who had been swept away by powerful currents.

Theerawat, alongside two other volunteers, 23-year-old Mod and 20-year-old Rick, was in the process of installing a critical metal barrier at a weir. The intention was to prevent locals from attempting risky crossings as heavy rainfall threatened the area. However, the sudden rise in water levels led to a tragic turn of events, with all three volunteers being caught by the fierce waters.

Thankfully, Mod and Rick were able to swim to safety, but their fellow volunteer, Theerawat, was pulled under and disappeared. Determined to locate him, the underwater rescue team began a meticulous search, anchoring themselves with ropes to brave the dangerous currents.

After a gruelling search lasting over three hours, the team discovered Theerawat’s body trapped near the base of the weir. His body was recovered and brought to land amidst a scene of immense grief, surrounded by family, friends, fellow volunteers, and local residents who gathered to pay their respects.

Police reported that Theerawat’s body was sent to Sikhiu Hospital for an autopsy before being released to his family for traditional religious rites. This incident underscores the inherent risks faced by those who dedicate themselves to the safety and wellbeing of others.

This tragic event echoes a separate incident on August 21 in Phuket, where a Russian man lost his life rescuing his girlfriend during a late-night swim. The couple encountered strong waves, and in a valiant effort, the man managed to push his girlfriend towards safety before disappearing into the rough sea. His body was discovered the following day.

Both incidents highlight the unpredictability and perils of water-related environments, emphasising the importance of safety awareness and the bravery of individuals who put others' lives before their own.

In the wake of this tragedy, local communities are reminded of the importance of respecting weather advisories and the dangers posed by severe water conditions. Volunteer efforts, while commendable and vital, require careful risk assessments to avoid further loss of life.

As the community mourns Theerawat's loss, his selfless actions serve as a poignant reminder of the dedication and bravery inherent in rescue work. His contribution, though ending in tragedy, epitomises the spirit of volunteerism and the profound impact these individuals have on their communities.

Efforts are underway to review safety protocols and provide additional training to further safeguard those who bravely serve on the frontline of emergency responses. Authorities urge both volunteers and the public to exercise caution and remain vigilant during adverse weather conditions to prevent future tragedies.
