A hunting trip in Loei province ended in tragedy on 8 September when a man was fatally shot after being mistaken for a wild boar. Police reported that the incident occurred around 18:00 in the Huai Khi Kratoi forest, Ban Pong village, Phon subdistrict, Dan Sai district. The victim, identified as Mr. Phu, 58, died from severe bleeding after being struck in the groin by a shotgun blast.

Investigators from Dan Sai Police Station, led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Manas Wongkhoksung, confirmed that Mr. Phu was hit with a 12-gauge shotgun round that severed a major artery. The shooter, 34-year-old Mr. Kamonwit from the same subdistrict, remained at the scene and surrendered to authorities. He also handed over the shotgun used in the incident.

According to the suspect’s statement, he had gone into the forest to hunt wild boar. When he saw movement in nearby bushes, he believed it to be an animal and fired once with his shotgun. Upon approaching, he discovered he had mistakenly shot his fellow villager, who collapsed from the injury and later died at the scene.

The body was examined by medical staff from Dan Sai Crown Prince Hospital and recovered by local rescue workers. The shooter was immediately taken into custody for questioning and further legal procedures. No other individuals were injured during the incident.

Police have charged Mr. Kamonwit with negligent homicide, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and carrying a firearm in a public place without permission. Authorities confirmed that the firearm used was not legally licensed. The case will now proceed through the judicial process in accordance with the law.
