A 20-year-old Myanmar worker suffered severe injuries after her hand became trapped in a meat grinder at a pork shop in Bang Bua Thong district, Nonthaburi, on 11 September. Rescue teams from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation and Bang Bua Thong municipal emergency unit rushed to the scene. It took about 30 minutes to dismantle the grinder and free her hand before she was taken to hospital.

The incident was reported at 08:40 by Ms. Sawitree, 37, a worker at the pork shop located on Bang Kruai–Sai Noi Road, Moo 6, Bang Bua Thong subdistrict. The victim, identified as Ms. Ae Hae, had been working at the shop for only a week. She was operating the grinder at the rear of the shop while other staff assisted customers at the front.

Colleagues heard her scream and found her hand caught in the machine and immediately alerted authorities. Rescue workers carefully removed each part of the grinder to release her. Initial medical checks found that all five fingers of her left hand were severely deformed due to crush injuries.

Volunteer rescuer Mr. Ekkalak Surawalai from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation confirmed that the victim was conscious and responsive when first responders arrived. He added that she was promptly transferred to Bang Bua Thong Hospital for urgent treatment. Doctors are now assessing the extent of her injuries and possible need for surgical intervention.

Ms. Sawitree explained that she had not seen the incident happen, as she was attending to customers. She only became aware when another worker raised the alarm. She said the victim had joined the team recently and had not yet gained much experience with the equipment.

The case highlights workplace safety concerns in small businesses that rely on machinery. Authorities are expected to review the incident, while doctors focus on treating the victim’s injuries and preventing long-term disability.

Why in the world must so many people put their hands in the grinders? It happens like 2-3 times per year.
