Crime Chiang Mai Man Arrested with 100kg of Crystal Meth in Lorry

Police in Lampang province seized over 100 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine hidden in a 22-wheel trailer truck on 9 September, arresting the driver in what authorities described as a large drug bust for northern Thailand. The suspect, a 38-year-old man from Chiang Mai, confessed to being hired to transport the narcotics from Lamphun to Ayutthaya for 120,000 baht. The announcement was made during a press conference on 11 September by Pol. Lt. Gen. Kritthapol Yisakorn, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 5.

 

The arrest took place in Sop Prap district, where officers intercepted the truck, a white Isuzu bearing Chiang Mai registration plates. Inside, police discovered eight large sacks containing more than 100 packages of crystal meth, with a combined weight exceeding 100 kilogrammes. Officials confirmed the haul represented a significant disruption of a trafficking network operating through northern Thailand.

 

The driver, identified as Mr. Damrong, admitted during questioning that he had been contracted by a fellow villager, 30-year-old Mr. Sitthisak, to deliver the drugs. He also confessed to making similar deliveries in the past. Investigators noted that the arrangement included a payment of 120,000 baht for this particular journey.

 

Police charged Mr. Damrong with multiple serious offences. These include “possession with intent to distribute a Category 1 narcotic,” “distribution of a Category 1 narcotic,” “using a vehicle for drug trafficking,” and “drug use while operating a vehicle.” Authorities emphasised that such crimes undermine national security and carry severe penalties under the law.

 

Officials stated that the investigation remains ongoing, with further efforts aimed at dismantling the wider network behind the transport. Police are now tracing connections to other suspects, including those who facilitated the trafficking route from Lamphun to Ayutthaya. The seized drugs are being held as evidence pending judicial proceedings.

 

Authorities in Lampang highlighted that this operation marks one of the largest seizures in the area this year. They added that further intelligence-led operations will continue in order to prevent the movement of narcotics through northern transport corridors.
