A 27-year-old Thai woman, identified as Sunny, faces legal proceedings in Taiwan after posting a video of herself flushing ten hamsters down the toilet on Instagram. This act of animal cruelty followed a breakup with her Taiwanese boyfriend, Xiang, who had asked her to move out of his apartment in Taichung City. The videos, shared on August 27, quickly went viral, attracting widespread condemnation.

Sunny entered Taiwan on a tourist visa in 2023, leaving her young son in Thailand and reportedly intending to work illegally. Initially working at an entertainment venue, she later moved in with Xiang. Their relationship soured, leading to a breakup and Xiang’s request for her to leave. Sunny refused to vacate the apartment, which resulted in Xiang involving the local police on August 28.

Authorities detained Sunny in Nantou City for overstaying her visa by two years and working without authorization. Meanwhile, Xiang reported her to the police for the hamster incident, but initial focus remained on the visa violation. Videos of the act spread rapidly across social media, garnering backlash and causing Sunny to delete her accounts.

Animal rights activists filed complaints, leading police to question Sunny during her detention. She admitted to the killings, alleging she acted to prevent the hamsters from being used as snake food by her ex-boyfriend. Prosecutors described her as unremorseful and evasive, passing the case to court for further action.

The court has yet to reach a verdict, but Sunny could face up to two years in prison and significant fines for animal cruelty. Additional penalties may apply for sharing the videos online.
