Ho Chi Minh City's Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien metro line has ceased the sale of paper tickets at four major stations starting September 15. The stations affected are City Theater, Ba Son, Van Thanh, and Phuoc Long. Passengers now have digital options such as purchasing QR tickets via the HCMC Metro HURC app or MoMo's Metro Miniapp, using bank cards or e-wallets at the gates, or utilizing chip-based ID cards linked to metro accounts. Cash is still accepted at vending machines, which now provide reloadable cards or QR codes instead of traditional paper tickets.

The transition is part of a pilot program by operator HURC1 aimed at reducing waiting times and minimizing cash usage. The company aims to enhance commuter convenience with modern payment options, while ensuring efficient system operation. Staff are stationed at the four locations to assist passengers in navigating the new cashless process for the first time.

The city’s metro line, which covers nearly 20 kilometers with 14 stations from Ben Thanh Market to Suoi Tien, offers various payment methods for commuters. In addition to QR codes and banking options, tickets can be purchased at kiosks using POS machines, through mobile e-wallets, or via monthly passes linked to chip-based IDs. This initiative aligns with Vietnam's broader push towards transitioning to a cashless society.

Following a delayed launch, the Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien metro started service at the end of 2024. Trains run daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with schedule adjustments during peak times and holidays. Ticket prices range from VND6,000 to VND20,000 (US$0.24-0.79), accommodating various passenger needs while encouraging adoption of the new system.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh metro halts paper ticket sales at four stations.
  • Passengers have multiple digital payment options available.
  • The move supports Vietnam's broader cashless transition.
