I’m having trouble sleeping due to my financial situation .

Treating the symptoms whilst nurturing the cause. Do you want to end your life as one who depends on drugs? What a shameful thing at the end of a clean life.

You're going to piss away your savings and still have to give up the health insurance anyways.  Why leave your disabled widow destitute?  Drop the coverage and accept your mortality, and end your life clean and sober.

Get rid of the health plan. Just say no to the medical mafia. Self insure. And when it is time to go, just embrace it.

Absolutely not, I got rid of my healthcare plan 10 years ago. Since then I've saved almost 3 million baht, and I'm not no longer dealing with these ridiculous healthcare companies that were hiking my rates 15 to 20% every year, despite no claims!

I've had two incidents in the past 10 years where I've needed a hospital here in Thailand, the first one cost me 7,000 baht and the second one required an 8-day stay in a very good public hospital and totaled 36,000 baht including two CAT scans.

Even if I found one that was affordable I would not consider a healthcare plan at this point in my life. I don't want it and I don't need it.

Well, I spent 1.2 mill. within 10 years. So at the end I have more money to spend including Health Insurance.

But if it's ok for you, so it's with me.

Used to go to India every couple of years for cancer check ups,Calcutta, cheap and damned good,Thailand  far too expensive, caught it at stage 2,  back to UK,extensive treatment getting on for 3 years now, cost NHS a bloody fortune,a fortune, now getting knees done ,that's twenty grand if there in Thailand,   do come back for a few months from time to time, but full time in Thailand   for me ,no thanks.     Had first turps op in India, excellent, second one NHS, now in and out in one day, improved surgery,....I missed western food more than I realised....rice and noodles gave me nightmares

Ive recently posted a topic in the Insurance in Thailand forum ( My private health insurance monthly cost is killing me ) . Due to my current poor and worrying financial situation , I am having great difficulty in being able to both get to sleep and staying asleep , as soon as my head hits the bed pillow , around 10 pm , my mind goes into over drive and starts to think about my financial issues and their implications, which generally keeps me awake for much longer . Some one who posted a reply to my insurance post , mentioned cannabis , as a possible answer to help with my poor sleep .

So I thought would ask here to see if any one can advise me or recommend a cannabis product that may help me with my current poor sleep problem. I have never smoked cigarettes and I’m not currently taking any medication .

Melatonin is cheaper than cannabis.  And works fast.

Almost 80 yo and decided against health insurance because of the low amount of cover I could afford without worry and the amount of co-payment.  I did enquire about two years ago with an agent for WR. Ended up asking about just serious illness and accident requiring hospital stay.  Recommended to try Zurich.  Better, but decided against it.  If I can't afford treatment then I'll just finish up if I can't fly back to Oz for treatment.

I had a three night stay in a local govt hospital this year for cellulitis.  Constant IV drip antibiotics and all up less than 5000 baht.

Almost 10 years ago living near Bangkok I had a hernia op.  First given a price of 150,000 baht.  I rejected that offer but then offered  max. of 40,000 if I went through the teaching side of the hospital.  After several trips into the city for tests the op. by the teaching surgeon.  Three nights in a two bed ward but me the only patient and only a couple of student visitors the total cost was 26,400 baht (~$1,000 AUD).

Ramathibodi hospital.  I couldn't fault the care, they were great!

Not Medical Advice but you could try these suggestions taken from previous posts on this forum.   These are not my posts or my comments, they are posts I've saved over the years.

1) Chloraphenarimine, little cheap, yellow allergy pills the Thais take to sleep and they are effective but I am always groggy the next day. Horrible feeling like you are only half functioning. About 50 baht for a bottle of 100.

2) Diphenhydramine works really well.  Half  50 mg tablet of Codiphen shortly before bed has me sleeping through the night.  Phenz is also good, with each capsule containing 50 mg of the active ingredient.  It's faster acting and also seems (for me at least) to wear off sooner, despite the higher dose.

3) Antihistamines available here that can be used for sleep/sedation include:

 1. Hydroxyzine

2. Doxylamine (Sominar)

Personally I find Doxylaime better but people do vary. Yes probably less groggy with it than with hydralyzine.

Neither is recommended for regular long term use.

Some people are more sensitive to the sedation (if that is the desired effect) provided by Chlorphenamine, which is available everywhere and is so inexpensive it might as well be free.

Also...

Melatonin helps you to fall asleep, but not necessarily to stay asleep.

Magnesium Glycinate helps you to relax and can be very useful for sleep issues.

GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter which essentially calms the nervous system and helps sleep.

5HTP is an amino acid precursor used in the formation of Serotonin. If you suffer from anxiety or mild depression, this can help resolve that and improve sleep.

To help with your financial difficulties stop your healthcare plan immediately. That saving will hopefully help you to sleep better. On sleep generally, I have never slept well but I have persuaded myself to stop worrying about it and that has helped a lot. Also, never attempt to go to sleep until you are really tired.

You mean, you pay until you die?

That's what most people end up with, so you might as well self insure.

I've got problem sleeping through nights as well, but it always help after I pee a few times. Oh well, that's a different problem, I guess.

Reading, or watching a movie might help, I usually fall asleep to both.

Get a recording of someone reading a boring story. You will be asleep in minutes.

watch DJT's oratory to the leaders of the world - if that doesn't do it, then guess nothing will.

Forget cannabis. Go get yourself a good screw about an hour before you retire to bed. Works every time for me.

Stop living beyond your means, and get out of that 10th world country.

This 'thumbs down' is probably from one of my stalkers. There seem to be three of them. I could post 'Chiang Mai is in Thailand' and they would give it a negative emoji. I actually find it flattering that they spend so much time watching for my posts.  🙂

5555, Great ,so I am not the only one that has  the Down Thumb on almost everything,

At least we got some Followers even if they are't fully there.  😇

After reading all the advice, I'll probably be the first to recommend the following, based on my own experience and poor sleep due to problems:
- Take valerian drops at intervals throughout the day, or at least an hour before bedtime.
It worked very well for me, and I slept for over 8 hours straight, not waking up in the night because I was struggling with problems.
The recommended remedy is purely herbal, without chemicals or drugs.

When your a single guy in Pattaya 70% at least goes on birds and booze. Also given the exchange rates over the last few years the money you worked hard for and saved can run out very quickly.

I realised that my money was going down fast years ago. So I started off by only having a bird for the one night a week and also go to bars weekends. If you need to drink daily go to 7Eleven.Try that for one month and see how much money you've saved. Many farangs live like tourists, if you're an expat live like one.

I am a single guy in Pattaya and don't spend on either, nor am I a homo. Totally agree with the exchange rate problem.

Being here on 30 or 40k would be tight. I'm not sure I'd want to prolong that existence if I was old, sick or disabled. It's fine for anyone in good health who can find meaning in things other than consumption.

Exchange rates over the "last few years" are not a factor.......GBP/THB was 39.65 five  years ago.

It is the expats on fixed pensions who came here 15/20 years ago that feel the pinch........ a 40% drop from the rate of 71 in 2006.

The OP has 2 threads open, one on his financial issues  in the Insurance forum   https://aseannow.com/topic/1373636-my-private-health-insurance-monthly-premium-cost-is-killing-me/page/8/#comments

And this one asking for help with insomnia here in the health forum .

To avoid confusion I suggest posting replies to each separately i.e. let's keep this thread in the health forum focused on insomnia.
