A baby elephant abandoned by its mother has been rescued in Lam Khlong Ngu National Park, Kanchanaburi, after being found weak and injured. Park officials confirmed the young female calf was suffering from exhaustion and a hind leg injury but is now showing signs of recovery. The animal remains under veterinary care.

The case was reported on 20 September when villagers in the Huai Chani forest area informed rangers that a wild elephant, with a young calf, was on farmland near Thong Pha Phum district. Park chief Arrakornnit Klangpraphan and his team inspected the site, blocked off access routes and monitored the mother and calf. By 21 September at 02:00, the pair had moved away, but the calf was later found alone and injured in the forest without its mother.

Officials contacted veterinarians from Protected Area Regional Office 3 (Ban Pong), who advised on initial care before the calf was transported to the Lam Khlong Ngu park office. Local villagers, rangers, and elephant response teams worked in shifts of 8–10 people to watch over the animal while awaiting veterinary arrival. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation confirmed that the calf was a female.

On 22 September, Department Director-General Attapol Charoenchansa reported that the calf’s condition had improved. However, he instructed staff to provide close monitoring until the animal regains full health. He emphasised that veterinary supervision would continue throughout the recovery process.

Meanwhile, the mother elephant has since rejoined its herd, which has moved several kilometres away from the site where the calf was discovered. Park authorities and community-based elephant response teams are tracking the herd to ensure safety and prevent any incidents. Officials said the monitoring will continue as a precaution.
