Police in Bangkok have dismantled an electronic cigarette smuggling operation, seizing over 50,000 items worth more than 10 million baht. The arrest was announced on 22 September 2025 by Pol Maj Gen Pattanask Boopasuwan, Commander of the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD), along with senior officers. The suspect, 24-year-old Phanthawong Laikraka, was detained at a house in Bang Khae district with thousands of vaping products and two vehicles.

The investigation stemmed from earlier seizures of illegal e-cigarettes linked to a wider smuggling network. Police discovered that the group planned to transport a large shipment from neighbouring countries through southern provinces into Bangkok. The products were then stored in houses and warehouses before distribution to smaller vendors nationwide.

Following intelligence reports, officers tracked the latest consignment to a property on Kanchanaphisek Soi 3, Lak Song subdistrict. The site was used not only for storage but also as a packing facility before delivery via private couriers. A court warrant was obtained, leading to the raid and the capture of Phanthawong with a significant portion of the contraband.

The investigation extended to a warehouse in Phasi Charoen district, where further goods were recovered. In total, the seized items included more than 50,000 e-cigarettes and accessories, valued at over 10 million baht. Police confirmed that this marked one of the largest single operations against the illegal vaping trade this year.

During questioning, Phanthawong confessed to being part of the smuggling network. He admitted his role involved distributing products to retailers in Bangkok and surrounding areas. He was transferred to CPPD investigators for legal proceedings under the 2017 Customs Act.

Authorities highlighted that e-cigarettes remain banned in Thailand and warned of continued enforcement against smuggling networks. The CPPD stated it will intensify operations targeting both local distributors and cross-border suppliers. Officials added that the crackdown aims to disrupt supply lines before the products reach young consumers.

Investigators are working to trace the full network and identify other suspects linked to the distribution chain. Additional raids and arrests are expected as the inquiry expands into regional supply routes. Police emphasised their determination to tackle the illegal trade, citing the high value and widespread demand as ongoing challenges.
