Lâm Đồng province is intensively inspecting twelve seafood businesses from September 22-26 to comply with the European Union's regulations on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. This action is part of a nationwide effort to lift the European Commission's "yellow card" warning and safeguard the export industry.

The inspections focus on evaluating the businesses' adherence to anti-IUU protocols across their supply chains. These protocols cover every stage from the procurement of raw materials to processing, preservation, and export. Director Nguyễn Văn Chiến emphasized that businesses must be adequately prepared for the European Commission’s fifth inspection by maintaining well-organized records.

Seafood processing is a significant industry in Lâm Đồng, with 26 companies operating 34 processing facilities authorized for export, including five that ship directly to Europe. In the year's first half, the province processed over 20,000 tonnes of seafood, earning more than US$117 million, a 6% increase compared to the previous year.

To meet EC recommendations, Lâm Đồng has implemented public awareness campaigns on anti-IUU fishing laws. These efforts have involved over 500 outreach sessions and commitments from 5,735 vessel owners and captains. The national fisheries database, VNFishbase, has registered over 8,400 fishing boats, with nearly all 1,984 vessels 15 meters or longer equipped with vessel monitoring systems.

Authorities have been proactive in addressing non-compliance, forwarding over 150 violation cases for administrative action. Of the few vessels still lacking monitoring systems, 12 have been suspended from operations until they meet compliance standards.

Looking forward, Lâm Đồng remains committed to ensuring full compliance with EU standards, safeguarding its seafood export industry. This commitment involves continued inspections, community education, and strict enforcement measures.

Key Takeaways

  • Lâm Đồng inspects seafood firms to address EU's IUU concerns.
  • The province is focused on compliance to lift the "yellow card."
  • Strict measures and awareness drives aim for sustainable fisheries.
