Your Countries Are Going to Hell’: Trump’s Wake-Up Call to Europe

For Donald Trump, this was a Daniel-in-the-lions’ den moment. Standing before the United Nations — a body his administration openly dismisses as corrupt, declining, and irrelevant — the President delivered one of the bluntest speeches of his career.

Washington’s relationship with the UN is at rock bottom. The United States has already pulled out of the Human Rights Council, UNESCO, and the Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, while UN officials have lined up to attack Trump’s policies on deportations and his unwavering support for Israel. Against that backdrop, his message to world leaders was uncompromising.

He flatly rejected calls from allies like Britain, France, Canada, and Australia to recognise a Palestinian state, insisting that Hamas must first release its hostages. Then he turned his firepower on Europe.

Trump has long criticised the European Union, but this was something different: a full-scale assault on the policies and failures of Europe’s leaders. Before an audience that included Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, and Sir Keir Starmer, Trump laid down a gauntlet:

  • End open borders.

  • Stop importing criminals.

  • Defend your sovereignty.

  • Fight Islamist extremism.

  • Protect Christianity.

  • Abandon costly Net Zero policies.

The message was stark — “your countries are going to Hell” — and impossible for European elites to ignore, even if they desperately wanted to.

Melodramatic? Perhaps. But for millions of Europeans disillusioned with mass migration, rising crime, and punishing climate measures, Trump’s words were a rallying cry. They reflected the growing tide of populist and national conservative movements from Britain to France, Germany to Austria.

On climate, Trump swung hard, torching Europe’s Green Deal and announcing once again that the United States was out of the Paris Accord. He argued that Net Zero policies are ruinously expensive and deliver minimal results — a burden ordinary Europeans can no longer afford.

He also called out Europe’s energy hypocrisy: how can nations claim to fight Russia while spending billions on its gas? The EU still buys more than half its liquefied natural gas from Moscow. “You cannot fund Putin’s war machine and oppose it at the same time,” Trump warned.

His tough-love approach has already had results. Under Trump’s relentless pressure, NATO allies recently committed to spending 5% of GDP on defence at a summit in The Hague. Expect his UN call to defend borders and sovereignty to resonate just as forcefully, as populist pressures grow at home.

Love him or loathe him, Trump always delivers a shockwave. His UN speech was no exception: a bold challenge to complacent elites and a wake-up call for Europe. More than anything, it was a rallying cry for the defence of Western civilisation — from a president who, whatever his critics say, cares deeply about its survival.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Europe under fire – tore into EU leaders over open borders, Islamist extremism, Net Zero costs, and loss of sovereignty.

  • “Your countries are going to Hell” – stark warning to European elites, but one that resonates with disillusioned voters.

  • Migration as the defining issue – his words echoed the rise of populist and conservative movements across Europe.

  • NATO pressure works – under Trump, Europe committed to 5% GDP defence spending.

  • Big picture – Love him or loathe him, his UN address was a game-changer: a rallying cry to defend Western civilisation.

Oh the irony.

He has made some big mistakes, the way he implemented his worldwide tariiffs being only one of them, but I have to agree with him on what he said at the UN. I do agree on reducing pollution, but this net zero is too extreme.

That is his childish knee jerk reaction to Putin making him look a right tool.

He doesn't mean it in real way.

A few decades ago, Europe was about even with the USA in GDP.  Now, it's at about 60%.  That, according to Jamie Dimon, who knows a thing or 2 about GDP.

Trump's right, and he's doing the nice thing for the European people, if not for their so called leaders.  He's calling those idiots out.  A few more decades of those geniuses, and Europe will be about even with Sub Saharan Africa,

The EU (I assume you mean, not Europe) was originally a much smaller collection of the wealthier nations.

As time has progressed poorer, weaker nations have joined ..........so you are not comparing apples with apples.

Currently......

Average GDP per capita (top 5 EU): $90,795

United States (2025): $89,678

Just to give some context

I watched it, thought he was completely correct and gave very sensible advice, the UN is deliberately funding the overthrow of Europe.

Paris really is shocking, especially if you travel in by train and first go through the banlieus. Terrifying.

The again, Harlow or Duisburg are not much better. Nor are the parks in Zurich.

As I posted this a thumbs down went on.

Can the mods tell me who it was?

No way did they have time to read it, let alone understand what was being said.

Nice cherry picking.

The total EU average is around $42K USD.

I'd have added a 3rd, but my policy is to use the "Like" emoji, or none at all.

How can you not understand what I was pointing out......???

Comparing EU GDP now with historical GDP figures is non-sensical because of the growth and inclusion of poorer nations.

Tell that to Dimon.

I didn't quote him.  I paraphrased.  Here's the quote(s) from Fortune.com:

“Europe has gone from 90% of U.S. GDP to 65% over 10 or 15 years. That’s not good,” he told the audience, which included Irish officials and business leaders.

He attributed this decline to structural issues and urged European policymakers to take bold action to reverse the trend. He added “the EU has a huge problem at the moment” when it comes to the competitiveness of its economy. Simply put, he said, “You’re losing.”

That's not good...  The EU has a huge problem...  You're losing...  That sounds a lot like what Trump said, eh?

I read/heard in other news his autocue stopped working so he just rambled on saying nonsense, repeating himself over and over again. ( Sky news at Ten UK )

It is a very dangerous time in the world now.

But as far as going to hell, Mr. Trump may well be looking in the mirror.
