Three children have died and four others were injured after a monastery wall collapsed during heavy rainfall in southern Myanmar on Wednesday afternoon.

The tragedy occurred at around 3pm in Konepawywarthit village, Lamaing township, Mon State, as locals gathered to watch a football match. According to the chairman of the Hnitkayin rescue organisation, the children had been standing near the monastery’s brick wall when it gave way under the pressure of torrential rain.

Two of the victims died instantly, while a third succumbed to injuries en route to hospital. All were aged between 12 and 13.

The four injured children were rushed to Ye General Hospital, where two remain in serious condition. Emergency responders and villagers worked together to clear debris and assist the wounded.

Myanmar has been experiencing intense monsoon conditions, with flash floods and landslides reported across several regions. Poor infrastructure and ageing buildings in rural areas have heightened risks, particularly for children and vulnerable communities.

Local authorities have yet to issue a formal statement, but rescue teams are urging residents to avoid unstable structures during periods of heavy rain. The incident has sparked calls for improved safety measures around public buildings, especially those frequented by children.

As the country continues to grapple with seasonal storms, communities in Mon State are mourning the loss of young lives and bracing for further challenges.
