Senior law enforcement officials from the United States, Thailand, and Laos met in Bangkok on 23–24 September 2025 to strengthen cooperation against transnational crime. The two-day trilateral summit aimed to enhance joint efforts against human trafficking, child exploitation, drug and weapons smuggling and cyberscams affecting Southeast Asia. Officials agreed to improve communication and enforcement strategies to tackle these cross-border threats.

The meeting was coordinated by U.S. embassies in Bangkok and Vientiane, bringing together 30 senior immigration police officials, 15 each from Thailand and Laos, alongside American representatives from agencies including Homeland Security Investigations and Customs and Border Protection. The discussions addressed the growing challenge of transnational criminal networks operating across the region’s porous borders. Participants noted the urgency of coordinated responses to such crimes that disregard national boundaries.

During the summit, officials emphasised that “criminals don’t respect borders, so our response shouldn’t either.” They discussed establishing more streamlined communication channels and harmonised enforcement approaches to counter the rising threat of cyberscams and trafficking. The meeting also reflected a shared commitment to enhancing regional security and protecting vulnerable communities.

The initiative forms part of broader U.S. State Department efforts to strengthen law enforcement cooperation across ASEAN. Cross-border crime prevention is expected to feature prominently at the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur next month. Officials said the exchange marked a significant step towards building stronger partnerships to address complex transnational crimes.
