Bangkok authorities and investigators are intensifying efforts to address the collapse of a section of Samsen Road near Vachira Hospital, which occurred on September 24. The incident, located close to the Samsen Police Station and the under-construction entrance of the Purple Line extension, caused damage to police accommodation and private property. Officials are now examining responsibility, safety and repair measures as the situation continues.

Police confirmed on September 26 that evidence is being gathered against those linked to the collapse. Pol Col Chaiwut Chai-olan, superintendent of Samsen Police Station, said cases would cover both individual losses and structural damage to the station’s buildings. At least four to five complainants, mostly police staff residing in nearby flats, have already reported damaged rooms and vehicles.

Damage to the station itself has also been recorded, though police stressed that final charges cannot yet be specified. Investigators are awaiting findings from engineering experts to determine whether the collapse was caused by accident or negligence during Purple Line construction. Legal action will proceed only once the technical investigation confirms the cause.

Meanwhile, political scrutiny has increased. Suphanat Minchaiynunt, Bangkok MP from the Prachachon Party, announced that the House committee on construction standards will convene on October 1 to discuss the collapse. Five parties have been summoned: the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA), contractors CK and Sino-Thai, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority and the Office of Insurance Commission.

Suphanat emphasised the need for a formal accident investigation mechanism to ensure responsibility is clearly defined for this and any future incidents. He noted that the lack of such a process has forced ad-hoc responses to each occurrence, delaying accountability. The committee intends to recommend establishing a permanent investigation system to government.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt inspected the site, on 26 September and confirmed hospital buildings remain safe and stable. He said vibration monitoring detected no movement, and services at Vachira Hospital continue as normal. Around the site, large cracks were identified but were mostly old and unrelated to the latest collapse.

Repair work is ongoing, with sandbags and 700 cubic metres of concrete already poured to fill underground voids. Officials reported that leaks in the tunnel area have been sealed, though additional layers of concrete, sand and stone will be applied in the coming days. The governor stated that permanent repairs, including water pipe replacement and road reconstruction, are expected within 14 days, though the timeline may vary depending on conditions.

I think the problem was digging train tunnels under the swamp.
