Local residents in Nakhon Ratchasima joined officials on 26 September 2025 to inspect progress and safety measures at two underpass projects in the city centre. The visit followed growing concerns after a recent road collapse incident in Bangkok raised fears about similar risks in Korat. More than 100 residents and community leaders were present alongside engineers, municipal representatives and rescue units.

The inspection covered the underpasses at the Terminal 21 Korat junction and the Phra Dod junction. Project engineers briefed attendees on construction progress, safety measures and flood prevention systems. The projects are part of a Department of Highways initiative to ease heavy traffic congestion in central Nakhon Ratchasima.

Residents expressed anxiety that the underpasses could pose safety risks due to their location in the city centre. However, project leader Praphot Thammapratip said he was fully confident in the construction standards. He noted that engineers confirmed the structures meet national safety requirements and are designed to prevent flooding.

Praphot added that construction delays had occurred due to issues with municipal water pipelines, but completion is still expected within the contracted timeframe. He urged the public to help maintain the underpasses once open, particularly by avoiding graffiti or damage to decorative sculptures intended to enhance the structures as city landmarks.

Project engineer Taweesak Saksinanon stated that construction is being carried out in line with strict engineering standards. He said structural movement is monitored continuously and drainage systems include barriers and walls to stop outside water entering the tunnels. Five high-capacity pumps have been installed to remove rainwater from inside the underpasses.

Taweesak confirmed that heavy rainstorms had not caused any flooding during the construction period. He added that accidents on-site had been minimal due to safety measures and traffic management was in place, especially at peak times near Terminal 21, with police ensuring smooth flow along Mittraphap Road.

The Terminal 21 underpass is a reinforced concrete tunnel with two lanes, 9.10 metres wide and 929 metres long. With a budget of 373 million baht, construction began in August 2023 and is scheduled to finish in April 2026. Progress is at 72%, ahead of schedule by 11%.

The Phra Dod underpass is a six-lane reinforced concrete tunnel, 25.50 metres wide and 1,075 metres long. It has a budget of 849 million baht, with construction starting in July 2023 and expected completion in July 2026. Work is currently 73% complete, ahead of schedule by 4%.
