Scammers calling

Got a call from a mobile number in Thai, she said she was calling from Bangkok Bank head office (on a Saturday, during lunch break), some Ms Kanjana (couldnt understand the last name) had opened an account in my name, using my "documents". She knew my full name and ID number. Zero English spoken, so when I asked her to spell her name in English she hung up.

She had given me a landline number to call back,  i called,  nobody answered.

I went to a Bangkok Bank branch nearby, and when I was talking to the staff,  another mobile number called, a guy "from Bangkok Bank head office" in Thai - so I just handed the phone to Bangkok Bank staff.

After a polite phone conversation, the real Bangkok Bank staff told me it was a scammer.  He wanted to block the 2 numbers on my phone,  but he only deleted them.  So I couldn't tell DTAC (DTAC said they don't see incoming numbers).

He confirmed Bangkok Bank doesn't have an account with my name or ID number.

There’s a new feature in iOS 26 on iPhone that forces unknown callers to say why they’re calling before you answer.

In the Phone app settings, it appears as:

Ask Reason for Calling

Calls from unsaved numbers will be asked for more information before your iPhone rings.

When enabled, your iPhone will silently pick up and prompt the caller to state their name and reason. Their response is transcribed on your screen so you can decide whether to accept or reject the call.

With this new function enabled many people will probably stop getting bothered by scammers over the phone.

I don't answer any calls from numbers I don't recognise, and block them.

Well how about this?

A week ago I received a call from +697106580775494, as I recognized it as spam I immediately blocked it.

20 minutes later  received a call from +6580775494, note that this is the same number without the +69 prefix and is from Singapore.

I didn't answer.

About half hour later I got call again from the same number, and since I have customers who may reside in Singapore, I this time answered it.

I got an automated voice message in Thai language, so hung up right away, but I couldn't block the number.

I called True and asked why I couldn't block it, and they said it's because they don't recognize it as a spam number.

Since then True has called me back 4 times over 24 hours to tell me they reported it but didn't get an answer from the associated department.

I have told them to stop calling me with their drivel, and call me only when they get it sorted

DTAC was just as helpful as True.

After all, they get paid for spam calls just like for any other call.

I missed a call from 020222534 on my AIS sim yesterday (Saturday). I was worried it might have been from Bangkok Bank as my account is still frozen. I put the number into Grok and it didn't find any reference related to Bangkok Bank and said that 02 numbers have been used in scams in the past (for whatever that's worth). I didn't call the number back, to be safe.

Normally blocking numbers is a function of and handled by the smartphone itself. If you go into your recent call list, select a number that you want to block, and add it to the phone's block list, the call will still hit your phone if the scammer calls again, but it will be silently blocked by the phone. Your phone will not ring and you will not see that the call came in. It doesn’t matter what the number is or where it’s from. Once it’s on the block list, it should not get through and the phone will just silently reject the incoming call.

I don’t bother reporting scam numbers to providers anymore. There are too many of them and it’s not worth the effort. The easiest approach is to block them as soon as they show up. And if you see a number starting with +697, you can assume it’s a scam and block it right away.

Got a phonecall to my thai number when i stayed in my country.I answered and a lady said I didn't pay the last 3 months about my motorcycle.I don't have a motorcycle so I blocked this number rigth away.I also get many calls from 02 numbers but i blocked this too.

"02 numbers" are simply Bangkok landline phone numbers. There are literally millions of legitimate 02 numbers in Thailand. Probably 99% of 02 numbers aren't scam calls. So blocking all 02 numbers doesn't make much sense.

I know the functions of my phone.

The number with +69 prefix marked as spam and blocked it.

The number with +65 prefix I could mark as spam, but when I selected block, nothing happened. I called True and they said it was an issue at their side.

In the meantime they have blocked it
