At least 34 civilians, including children and women, have been killed in a brutal four-day campaign of junta airstrikes across Myanmar, marking one of the deadliest escalations in recent months. The attacks, which ran from 26 to 29 September, targeted resistance-held towns and villages, flattening homes, hospitals and markets.

According to The Irrawaddy, 16 separate strikes were documented across Sagaing, Magwe, Bago, and Mandalay regions, as well as Kachin, Chin, Karen, Rakhine and Shan states. Two resistance bases were also hit, killing 17 fighters.

On Monday, two fighter jets bombed the market in Sadon town, Kachin State—controlled by the Kachin Independence Army—killing eight civilians, including two children. Around the same time, three 500lb bombs were dropped on Paletwa in Chin State, held by the Arakan Army, killing two women and injuring 19 others. A public hospital was among the buildings destroyed.

“The fighter jet dropped a single bomb before returning to unleash two more,” a local woman said. “Children are among the injured and three are in critical condition.”

The Arakan Army issued a statement condemning the strikes, accusing the regime of retaliating for recent battlefield losses by targeting civilian infrastructure—schools, monasteries, and markets—in areas under its control.

Further attacks on Monday saw gyrocopters bomb villages in Sagaing Region, forcing residents to flee. Just days earlier, a petrol station and restaurant in Kaduma village were hit, killing 11 civilians.

Resistance camps were not spared. In Mandalay’s Natogyi Township, over 20 bombs were dropped on a People’s Defense Force base, killing 14 and injuring 10. In Magwe Region, three members of the Myaing Underground Defense Force were killed in a separate strike.

The civilian National Unity Government reports that the junta has carried out over 3,400 airstrikes since January 2023, resulting in nearly 3,700 deaths.

At the UN General Assembly last Friday, Myanmar’s ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun urged the international community to halt the supply of arms and jet fuel to the regime, warning that continued support enables the slaughter of innocent civilians.
