A 53-year-old man died after being doused in petrol, set on fire and stabbed multiple times by a colleague in Nakhon Phanom Province. The attack took place on 30 September 2025 at around 15:00 inside a warehouse on Highway 2033 in Na Kae Subdistrict, just 200 metres from Na Kae Police Station. Police arrested the suspect, 46-year-old Mr Sornchai Yatakhot, at the scene, where he was found waiting with a knife, lighter, petrol container and motorcycle.

The victim, identified as Mr Somdet Phromdee, sustained severe burns and deep knife wounds. He was rushed to Na Kae Hospital by co-workers but succumbed to his injuries around 19:00 the same day. Forensic officers collected the suspect’s 18.5-inch knife, a petrol can, a plastic paint bucket and other items as evidence.

According to investigators, the suspect admitted he attacked his colleague out of long-standing resentment. He claimed their conflict dated back to August when Mr Somdet allegedly mocked him after a sack of cement slipped during unloading. Since then, the two men had exchanged hostile remarks and maintained a tense relationship.

On the day of the incident, Mr Sornchai said he believed his co-worker mocked him again by smirking while they passed each other at work. Fearing further provocation, he decided to act first by filling a bucket with petrol and pouring it over the victim as he sat on his motorcycle, then igniting him with a lighter. After Mr Somdet collapsed in flames, the suspect chased him down and struck him with a knife.

Colleagues who attempted to intervene were threatened and punched by the suspect, forcing them to retreat. The warehouse owner eventually helped extinguish the flames. Officers detained Mr Sornchai, who later confessed during questioning.

Following confirmation of the victim’s death, police upgraded the charge from attempted murder to murder. The suspect remains in custody as authorities prepare to pursue legal proceedings.
