A new tree-lined bicycle lane is set to be established on the sidewalks of Mai Chi Tho Boulevard, according to the Urban Traffic Management Center. The lane will span a 5.8-kilometer stretch between Nguyen Co Thach and D1 streets, providing a long-awaited cycling path in this busy urban area. The project, with an estimated cost of VND13 billion (US$510,000), aims to meet the increasing demand for cycling.

The decision follows plans announced by the center’s director, Doan Van Tan, who highlighted the growing interest in urban cycling. The lane will be constructed on either side of Mai Chi Tho, with construction scheduled to begin in October and finish within 90 days. Current sidewalks will undergo modifications to accommodate the two-meter-wide lane, which will include clear markings and complete separation from motor vehicle lanes.

Local reactions indicate a mix of anticipation and concern. Le Tien Hau, a resident, noted certain areas pose risks, especially those paved with slippery granite. Despite these concerns, the plan includes upgrading problematic spots, such as the narrow bridges and sections currently under renovation. Frequent users hope the new lane will alleviate congestion and improve cycling conditions during peak hours.

Looking forward, the initiative is expected to enhance connectivity with public transport systems, including city buses and the metro network. This development is a key part of the city's vision for a greener, more accessible urban environment. Following its completion, plans are in place to extend the bicycle lane to Vo Nguyen Giap Street, linking it directly to the An Phu metro station, with further expansions connecting to the Saigon River Park.

Key Takeaways

  • Mai Chi Tho Boulevard to get a 5.8-kilometer dedicated bike lane.
  • Construction starts in October, with completion in 90 days.
  • Future plans include extending the lane to enhance transit connectivity.
