Kim Aris, the younger son of Myanmar’s detained democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, has made a rare public plea to Chinese President Xi Jinping, urging him to pressure Myanmar’s military junta to release his mother from prison.

Speaking from London, Aris broke years of silence to highlight Suu Kyi’s deteriorating health and harsh prison conditions. The 80-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate has spent nearly two decades in detention since 1989, and is currently held in solitary confinement following the 2021 coup that ousted Myanmar’s elected government.

“China holds the most influence,” Aris said, citing Beijing’s longstanding ties and deep investments in Myanmar. “I appeal to President Xi Jinping to call for her release and to do more to put pressure on the junta … to make sure that those who should be freed are freed.”

Aris, now 48, has largely avoided the spotlight throughout his life, even during brief visits to Myanmar when allowed to see his mother. His decision to speak out reflects growing concern over Suu Kyi’s health and the junta’s continued crackdown on dissent.

China has maintained close relations with Myanmar’s military rulers, investing heavily in infrastructure projects under its Belt and Road Initiative. Observers say Beijing’s influence could be pivotal in shaping the junta’s approach to political prisoners.

Suu Kyi remains a symbol of Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement, despite her controversial tenure in government. Her continued detention has drawn international condemnation, with rights groups and foreign governments calling for her unconditional release.

Aris’s appeal adds a personal dimension to the global campaign for her freedom, placing moral pressure on one of Myanmar’s most powerful allies. Whether Beijing responds remains to be seen.
