Bangkok authorities have begun round-the-clock demolition of the subsiding Samsen Police Station using automated equipment, after continued soil movement caused parts of the building to sink. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has poured over 4,500 cubic metres of sand into the affected area to stabilise the ground and support the structure, for a controlled demolition, as the building continues to tilt inward by about 50 centimetres. Officials said the measure aims to prevent further collapse and ensure the safety of nearby facilities, including Vajira Hospital.

The operation follows a technical committee’s urgent decision to dismantle the building, with the incident now entering its 11th day. Deputy project director of the MRT Purple Line, Watcharaphon Kongsawat, confirmed that overnight crews used automated arms to remove the building’s upper structures, including roof sections and window frames, before continuing daytime demolition work using cranes. Excavation and soil restoration are being carried out simultaneously to strengthen the area.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reported on 5 October 2025, that sections of the police station continued to shift slightly overnight, although nearby structures remain stable. He confirmed that about 800 cubic metres of sand were poured the previous night and an additional 1,200 cubic metres during the morning. The sand filling is being supplemented by cement injections around the soil walls to reinforce the ground and secure the nearby MRT tunnel.

Vajira Hospital director Dr Anuasang Jitsomkasem said monitoring sensors show no movement in the hospital’s building structure, which has remained stable since the incident began. Around 100 patients visited the hospital on 5 October due to it being a Sunday, with full services for approximately 3,000 expected to resume on 6;October. The hospital will reinstate its shuttle service and continue coordinating with city officials on traffic management, as road reopening plans have now been delayed until after schools reopen later this month.

Dusit district director Waranya Leelaburanapong visited the site at 10:00, to oversee progress and confirm that all work is being conducted under close supervision by technical experts. Safety measures include the removal of all vehicles from the area, additional ground reinforcement and ongoing inspection of adjacent police flats. Authorities reaffirmed that public safety and the protection of Vajira Hospital remain their top priorities.

Key Takeaways

•  Automated machinery is being used to dismantle the unstable Samsen Police Station for safety reasons.

• Sand and cement is being used to stabilise the soil.

• Nearby hospital buildings remain stable and city officials continue to monitor conditions.

Does Thai civil engineer NOT understand the Word Compaction  this has to be done in layers  NOT at the end of the fill  if this is not done correctly you will cause the bottom of the fill to collapse, vibrating rollers and plate compactors are required

they are now using a method called compaction grouting,    these numskulls do not know what they are doing,  compaction grouting in clay based soil does not work,  and Bangkok is built on clay based soil.
