The death toll from severe flooding in Thailand has reached 22, affecting approximately 370,000 people across 19 provinces. Emergency responders are actively distributing food and supplies as they monitor rising water levels due to heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers during the monsoon season. Among the most impacted regions are Uttaradit and Ayutthaya, with significant efforts underway to mitigate the challenges faced by these communities.

Flooding has primarily affected regions outside Bangkok, with six provinces in the North, including Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, and Nakhon Sawan, among others. In several areas such as Phitsanulok and Phetchabun, water levels remain unchanged, while they are starting to recede in places like Uttaradit and Sukhothai. In the Central Plains, eight provinces including Ayutthaya and Nakhon Pathom have reported flooding, with noticeable water level changes in Pathum Thani and Uthai Thani.

The northeastern region, including Chaiyaphum and Udon Thani, has also been hit, though flood levels have remained stable. In the East, only Chachoengsao is affected, with particular concern in the Bang Nam Prieo district, where water levels continue to rise.

Bangkok's governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, reassured citizens that severe flooding like the 2011 crisis is unlikely, noting that current water flow in the Chao Phraya River is below critical levels. Existing infrastructure, including embankments and sandbag barriers, is expected to protect vulnerable areas. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department warns that remnants of Tropical Storm Matmo are likely to bring further isolated heavy rainfall to the North, Northeast, and East.

In Vietnam, Typhoon Matmo has led to similar conditions, with parts of Hanoi experiencing flooding. Vietnam's weather agency anticipates up to three more storm systems by the year's end, indicating a continued threat to the region.

Key Takeaways

  • Flooding in Thailand affects about 370,000 people with a death toll of 22.
  • Existing flood prevention measures in Bangkok are expected to hold.
  • Vietnam braces for more storms following Typhoon Matmo.
