Vietnam's traffic police department is set to install thousands of AI-powered cameras nationwide to detect violations and manage traffic congestion. Announced on October 2, this initiative by the Ministry of Public Security aims to identify offenses such as running red lights and not wearing helmets. The system will also provide real-time traffic data for public use.

The project involves a central command hub at the Traffic Police headquarters, along with 34 provincial centers, to oversee operations. Currently, a trial is in place using nine AI cameras on the Noi Bai–Lao Cai Expressway and Hanoi streets like Pham Van Bach. These cameras capture violations, record time and location details, and cross-reference with the national vehicle database before police issue penalties.

Officials describe the technology as virtual patrol officers that monitor violations and regulate traffic flow. The deployment of AI cameras is expected to ease congestion and reduce accidents, thereby improving road safety. By capturing and analyzing data, the system trains the AI to enhance its violation detection capabilities.

Experts believe this system could transform traffic management in Vietnam but emphasize the importance of addressing privacy concerns and accuracy of the AI system. The project's success is likely to depend on public acceptance and the integration of the technology into everyday traffic management.

Looking ahead, Vietnam plans to expand the AI camera network across the country. Authorities hope to refine the technology further to capture a broader range of traffic violations and use collected data for comprehensive traffic management solutions.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam to install AI cameras for traffic violation detection.
  • The system includes a central hub and 34 provincial centers.
