23rd October.

Featured Replies

Yesterday was a Memorial Day commemorating the anniversary of the passing of King Rama 1X.

Does anyone know why there is a Memorial Day planned for the current (living) King on 23rd of this month?

23rd October is not for the current king.

It's for Chulalongkorn Rama V.

One with the title of a Great King.

Very popular in the minds of many Thais. Amulets with him everywhere.

If I remember right he abolished slavery?

Modernizing the country in many ways.

Don't forget: even critizing a historic King is lese majeste!

Edit: not in the movie...

For the current King Rama X there is coronation day (May 5) and birthday (July 28).

Movie is banned/forbidden in Thailand.

Ah! My mistake, thank you KhunBENQ.

He died in 1910.  Slavery was finally abolished in 1915.

Slavery was fully abolished in 1905 during King Chulalongkorn's reign.

In 1874 he issued a royal act freeing those born into slavery since 1868.

Please don't correct me if you don't know what you're talking about.  Slavery legally ceased in Thailand in 1915.  A quick Google search will provide a plethora of corroborating evidence.

One thing AN members excel at, ignorance :coffee1:

The question can be answered simply by googling "Did King Chulalongkorn end slavery in Thailand?"

This will be my last reply.

Your information is not only wrong, but your post has a testy, nasty ring to it that is distasteful.

He set the wheels in motion.  However, slavery didn't end until after he died, in 1915.

So, that's twice now you've wrongly corrected me.

Or ... you could Google, 'when did slavery end in Thailand', and get a more complete & accurate answer...maybe :coffee1:

And yet, slavery still seems to exist, into the 21st Century ... Go Figure

King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, freed the slaves in Old Siam.

That is an accepted historical fact.

Thanks for clarifying that without splitting hairs or going into a discourse of mind-numbing verbosity.
