Ho Chi Minh City has installed 31 AI-powered cameras on major streets and accident-prone areas to detect traffic violations and send data for fines. The cameras are located on busy roads like Dien Bien Phu and Nguyen Van Cu and two accident hotspots on the outskirts. This initiative aims to improve traffic monitoring and ensure precise data transmission to the city's traffic management system.

The sites for camera installation were chosen based on accident frequency, vehicle density, and violation-prone areas, explained Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga from the HCMC traffic police. The AI system identifies offenses such as running red lights, lane violations, speeding, and phone usage. Violations are recorded and sent to the Urban Traffic Operation Center, where they are verified before penalty decisions are issued within 8–10 days.

Unlike traditional systems, the AI models can track multiple vehicles at once, highlighting violations with red frames or lines on screens. Since its launch on September 1, the system has noted over 3,100 violations, enhancing processing speed and accuracy. Transparency in the process aims to minimize outside interference.

The move complements the over 1,200 cameras already in use for traffic and security monitoring throughout the city. Meanwhile, Hanoi is piloting a similar project, with new cameras detecting 1,452 red-light offenses within the first half-day of operation on September 24. Nationally, there is a proposal to expand the AI camera network to monitor up to 20 types of violations across Vietnam.

Key Takeaways

  • 31 AI cameras in Ho Chi Minh City are monitoring traffic violations.
  • The system recorded over 3,100 offenses since September 1.
  • A national expansion proposes thousands of AI cameras.
