EU Rejects Myanmar Election as Lacking Credibility

The European Union has ruled out sending observers to Myanmar’s upcoming general election, citing a lack of conditions for a free and fair vote under the country’s military regime.

Speaking in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, EU Special Representative for Human Rights Kajsa Ollongren said the December polls were unlikely to produce a credible outcome. “I would call them regime-sponsored elections. And if they're regime-sponsored, they can only lead to one outcome,” she told selected media.

Myanmar has been in political turmoil since its military seized power in 2021, ousting a democratically elected government and triggering widespread armed resistance. The junta, led by Min Aung Hlaing, has struggled to maintain control, with rebel groups now holding significant territory across the country.

In a rare admission on Wednesday, Min Aung Hlaing acknowledged that the military-backed administration would not be able to conduct elections nationwide, confirming that the vote will exclude large parts of the country.

Western governments and rights groups have widely condemned the planned election as a sham, accusing the junta of using it to legitimise its rule. The EU’s decision not to send observers reinforces international scepticism and highlights the deepening isolation of Myanmar’s military leadership.

Ollongren stressed that the presence of foreign monitors would not alter the outcome, given the absence of democratic safeguards. “The necessary conditions for free and fair elections have not been met,” she said.

The situation in Myanmar remains volatile, with ongoing clashes between the military and resistance forces, and widespread reports of human rights abuses. The planned election, critics say, risks entrenching authoritarian rule rather than restoring democratic governance.

As the December date approaches, international pressure is mounting on the junta to halt its plans and engage in meaningful dialogue with opposition groups. But with the military showing no signs of compromise, hopes for a peaceful resolution appear increasingly remote.
