Pope Calls for Ceasefire Amid Myanmar Escalation

Pope Leo XIV has issued a heartfelt plea for peace in Myanmar, urging an immediate ceasefire as fighting intensifies between government forces and rebel groups in the country’s north.

Speaking during the Angelus prayer on World Mission Sunday, the pontiff lamented the “distressing” news from Myanmar, where the military junta recently reclaimed a rebel stronghold after two weeks of fierce combat. “May the instruments of war give way to those of peace through inclusive and constructive dialogue,” he said, expressing spiritual solidarity with those suffering from violence and displacement.

Myanmar’s civil war erupted in 2021 following a military coup that ousted the elected civilian government. Since then, the conflict has pitted junta forces against a fragmented alliance of pro-democracy and ethnic resistance groups. The United Nations estimates that over 18 million people now require humanitarian aid, with more than 1.5 million displaced and tens of thousands of civilian structures destroyed.

The Pope’s appeal comes amid growing concern over the humanitarian toll and regional instability. His remarks also referenced ongoing conflicts in the Holy Land and Ukraine, calling on global leaders to pursue “a just and lasting peace.”

Pope Leo’s message echoes that of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who visited Myanmar in 2017 during the Rohingya crisis. While the current conflict is broader in scope, it continues to expose deep fractures in Myanmar’s political and ethnic landscape.

As the war drags on, the Vatican’s call for dialogue and restraint adds a moral voice to mounting international pressure for resolution.

Whether Myanmar’s leaders heed the appeal remains uncertain, but the Pope’s words offer a moment of reflection amid the chaos.
