Myanmar Raids Border Scam Hub, Arrests Over 2,000 Suspects

In a sweeping crackdown on transnational crime, Myanmar’s military has arrested more than 2,000 people at KK Park, a notorious scam compound near the Thai border. The raid, reported by state media on Monday, targeted a sprawling network of over 250 buildings in Myawaddy Township, Kayin State—long known as a haven for online fraud, illegal gambling, and money laundering.

Among the 2,198 detainees were 445 women and 98 security guards. Authorities also seized 30 Starlink satellite units, which had kept the compound online despite power cuts. The satellites, developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, underscore the technological sophistication of the criminal operations.

KK Park has drawn international scrutiny for its links to Chinese crime syndicates and its role in human trafficking. Rights groups say many workers are lured with false job offers and then forced to run online scams under slave-like conditions. The issue gained prominence in China earlier this year when actor Wang Xing was rescued from a similar centre by Thai police.

Myanmar’s military claims that senior figures from the Karen National Union—a group resisting the junta since the 2021 coup—were involved in the scam network. The region has seen frequent clashes between the military, ethnic armed groups, and the People’s Defence Force, the armed wing of Myanmar’s exiled National Unity Government.

The raid comes amid mounting pressure from Thailand and China to dismantle scam centres operating along the border. Thai police estimate that up to 100,000 people may be working in such operations in the region. Scam centres have proliferated across Southeast Asia in recent years, particularly in Myanmar and Cambodia, generating billions for international criminal syndicates.

In September, the US Treasury sanctioned more than 20 entities in Myanmar and Cambodia linked to scam activity, signalling growing global concern over the scale and reach of these operations.
