Egypt Backs Tony Blair As ‘Modern-Day High Commissioner’ For Gaza

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi is backing Tony Blair to play a leading role in post-war Gaza — a move that would effectively make the former British prime minister a “modern-day high commissioner,” according to senior Egyptian sources.

As Donald Trump arrived in the Middle East to discuss Gaza’s ceasefire implementation, he confirmed Blair’s name was “up for debate,” calling him “an acceptable choice — if everyone agrees.” Washington’s proposal has provoked fury across much of the Arab world, but not in Cairo, where Sisi’s government has maintained warm ties with Blair for over a decade.

Blair attended last week’s Sharm el-Sheikh summit alongside Trump and regional leaders, where he was greeted warmly by Sisi — a public show of support rooted in their shared hostility to political Islam. Egyptian presidential sources told Middle East Eye that Blair has long advised Sisi and his Gulf allies on suppressing Islamist movements, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas.

“The UAE financed Blair’s work and his team in Egypt,” one Egyptian official claimed, adding that Blair provided political and economic advice after Sisi’s 2014 coup. The Tony Blair Institute (TBI) denies being paid by Egypt or the UAE, though admits Blair has “met Sisi frequently.”

Analysts say Blair’s alliance with Sisi is based on mutual goals: fighting political Islam, securing Gulf funding, and stabilising the region. “For Sisi, Blair is not just an ally but a mirror — both see political Islam as the root of instability,” a Cairo-based analyst said.

According to Egyptian officials, Cairo would “wholeheartedly support” Blair’s leadership of the proposed Gaza International Transitional Authority (GITA), expected to be headquartered in Egypt’s Sinai city of el-Arish. The arrangement would allow Egyptian oversight of Gaza’s reconstruction and security.

One presidential adviser described Blair’s return to the region as “no coincidence,” saying he is “acting like a modern-day British high commissioner” — a reference to the colonial-era administrator of Palestine, Herbert Samuel.

Key Takeaways

  • Egypt backs Tony Blair to lead Gaza’s reconstruction under the proposed GITA framework.

  • Blair’s long ties with Sisi stem from shared opposition to political Islam and cooperation since 2014.

  • Egyptian officials say Blair’s role would give Cairo influence over Gaza’s future — critics see it as a neo-colonial move.

I've worked with Egyptians so I understand this completely.

Why is Blair so keen on this role anyway?

He's not hard up for cash, surely?

He looks even more demented in old age.

I think he is seeking redemption for his misdeeds in the Iraq war, along with all his lies to justify the invasion. Sorting out Gaza would lighten his guilt and improve his legacy.

Remember this one from the Iraq war....

Brave Hamas, if they can find enough children to use as human shields.

Misdeeds indeed, that's what I remembered, so this made it so strange that any Arab nation would support him for the role.

Though, if he really were to seek redemption for his errors, then perhaps that makes it more understandable.

My fear is that he woud just seek the spotlight in a high visibiiity role.

He has to be well connected, so it would make sense on some levels, but the last thing I'd want to see is Tony Blair on a regular basis.

Another one of those  "Jobs for the boys " type things , you think

they have sunk into oblivion ,and they keep coming back .

Not at all. The majority of funding is coming from white people. Do they not have a right to ensure that the  funds are not stolen or misused as was done previously? Former PM Blair has excellent relations with the Gulf State Arabs who are expected to fund  a significant portion of the development of Gaza.

Gaza has been a welfare state since Egypt surrendered its control and a large portion of previous aid funding was used to construct weapons and military infrastructure.  As such, the Gazans abandoned their right to fully control the aid money.  Who do you want to oversee the billions of Euro/$ in aid, and who has credibility with both the Arab states and the Israelis? Hamas and Fatah hate each other. Hamas was executing and kneecapping dissident Arabs this past week, and you expect that the donors and Palestinian Authority will co-operate with Hamas? Do you  really think that a local palestinian wants to  deal with the violent feuds that are ongoing in Gaza? No matter which local was picked, some of the factions and donors would disagree. Blair is neutral and seen as fair.

Egyptians are not ignorant.

The Egyptian president himself has a long-standing and very strong relationship with Blair.
