A 40-year-old man was critically injured after receiving a electric shock, while attempting to steal electrical cables in Samut Prakan early. The incident occurred near the entrance of Soi Sukhumvit 80 (Thong Suk), opposite Samrong Nuea Police Station, when the man climbed a utility pole to cut copper wires. He was struck by a high-voltage current, fell and became entangled in live wires as flames spread along the pole.

Police from Samrong Nuea Station received the report at around 00.30 on 23 October 2025 and coordinated with rescue workers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation. On arrival, they found the man lying face down on ground, on the fallen wires with severe burns across his body. He was unconscious and had no identification documents. Fire from the burning wires continued to spread, prompting rescuers to use chemical extinguishers to douse the flames both on the pole and the victim before moving him to safety.

Rescue teams administered first aid at the scene before transferring him to Samut Prakan Hospital in critical condition. A pair of pliers was discovered on the ground nearby, believed to have been used in the attempted cable theft. The intense heat from the electric arc had caused visible damage to surrounding cables and temporarily disrupted power in the area.

CCTV footage from nearby buildings captured the moment of the explosion as the man made contact with live wires. Sparks erupted across the road, followed by flames and smoke from the pole. Witnesses said the loud blast initially made them think a transformer had exploded.

A delivery rider named Mr. Tae, who was passing by when the explosion occurred, said sparks flew close to him as he drove past. “I thought it was a transformer, but it was actually the electric wire that exploded. Then I saw someone lying face down underneath,” he said.

Another witness, motorcycle taxi driver Mr. Witiya Thubtimjue, said he initially saw two suspicious men sitting near the pole before the incident. “I thought they were going to steal motorbike parts,” he recalled. Moments later, he heard a loud explosion and saw one man lying motionless on the ground while the other fled the scene. He added that bystanders hesitated to approach the victim for fear of electrocution.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and investigating whether others were involved in the attempted theft. The injured man remains in hospital under close supervision as authorities work to identify him.

Only if he does not recover. Usually, these are  long time thieves. It is what they do. Injury is  part of their job. They keep at it until they are locked up, aged out or incapacitated through either death or injury,

Good, that should teach him not to steal anything that didn't belong to him.
