Authorities in northern Vietnam have exposed a significant gold smuggling operation, where nearly 100 kilograms of gold were illicitly brought across the Chinese border. Tran Thi Hoan, owner of Hoan Hue Jewelry Store, along with seven others, is facing charges of 'smuggling' following an investigation by the Ministry of Public Security. Three executives from Vietnam Gold Investment and Trading Corporation are also accused of 'violations of accounting regulations causing serious consequences.'

The investigation revealed that the operation began after Hoan was approached by "Ba Beo," a Chinese woman, offering 99.99% pure gold bars at lower prices than the Vietnamese market. The gold was transported from China to Vietnam by hiding 1-kg bars inside shoes. Exploiting gaps in Lao Cai International Border Gate inspections, couriers earned VND250,000 per kilogram for successful deliveries.

Once the gold was smuggled into Vietnam, it was brought to Hoan's jewelry store, inspected, and then sold to multiple customers who allegedly were unaware of its illegal origins. It is estimated that Hoan and her alleged accomplice, Pham Tuan Hai, trafficked 564 kilograms of gold valued at roughly US$47.5 million. The identities of key figures like Ba Beo remain unconfirmed.

Hoan admitted to tracking purchase quantities but claimed ignorance regarding sales prices and final use, reporting a VND100 million profit from dealings. Meanwhile, Vietnam Gold Investment and Trading Corporation executives reportedly sold much of this gold without proper invoices, leading to tax losses exceeding VND5 billion. An inspection confirmed border officers did not conduct body searches or use scanners, finding no misconduct by customs or guards.

Looking forward, the courts will examine the case further, with indictments likely for those involved. Authorities are expected to review border policies to prevent future incidents. Continual monitoring may occur to ensure no further breaches of this kind arise.

Key Takeaways

  • Nearly 100 kg of gold was smuggled using gaps in border inspections.
  • Authorities are pursuing prosecution against key individuals involved.
  • Tax losses from the operation are estimated to exceed VND5 billion.
