A road crash in Phayao province on the evening of 25 October claimed four lives, including that of a three-year-old boy, after a car veered off a narrow, unlit road and plunged into a canal. Police believe poor visibility and road conditions were major contributing factors.

At 18.55 Dok Khamtai police received a report from Dok Khamtai Hospital’s emergency room about a car that had fallen into the water near Moo 6, Dong Suwan subdistrict, bordering Pa Sang subdistrict in Dok Khamtai district. Police officers, together with rescue teams from the Khun Lan Emergency Unit and the Koontham Saeng Thong Rescue Foundation, quickly arrived at the scene.

They found local residents gathered along the narrow, unlit road where the crash occurred. A black Nissan Almera car was discovered submerged about two metres deep and roughly ten metres from the roadside. Bystanders had already helped pull the victims from the vehicle before officials arrived.

All four occupants were confirmed dead at the scene. The victims were identified as Mr Siamphon (29) of Moo 6, San Khong subdistrict; Mr Sitthichai (32) and Ms Sukanya (27), both from Moo 3, Pa Sang subdistrict and a three-year-old boy from Moo 1, Dong Suwan subdistrict, all residents of Phayao province. Rescue workers coordinated with doctors from Dok Khamtai Hospital to conduct a preliminary examination before transferring the bodies for further legal procedures.

Initial police investigations suggest the crash was caused by the combination of a narrow, curved road without lighting and the proximity of a canal along the roadside, leading the car driver to lose control and plunge into the water. Officers are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the precise cause of the crash.

Yes, that's easy to say, but even if you're only driving at 30 km/h, a pothole can easily send you into the water.
Incidentally, who is responsible for road conditions?
