Vietnamese authorities have dismantled a significant fraud network operating in Cambodia, arresting 59 Vietnamese nationals accused of defrauding more than 8,000 victims. The network allegedly swindled around VND300 billion (US$12 million) by posing as delivery workers, police officers, and soldiers. The arrests followed a raid on October 29 at Bokor Hill in Kampot Province.

The operation was led by a special task force from Lai Chau Police in collaboration with the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and the Department of Criminal Police. The suspects included 15 ladyboys and were discovered operating from Bokor Ecological Park in Bokor City. The alleged leader, Sung Thi Mai, known as Vi, was identified as the mastermind, managing accomplices who used fake identities to carry out the scams.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Long, Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Public Security, directly supervised the law enforcement action. This successful bust underscores the cooperative efforts between Vietnam and Cambodia, particularly following the recent signing of the UN Convention against Cybercrime in Hanoi. Police highlighted the operation as a key example of international law enforcement collaboration.

Currently, the suspects are being processed for transfer to Vietnam, where they will face further investigation for large-scale online fraud. This development signifies a broader crackdown on transnational criminal activities as authorities continue to pursue legal action against those involved.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnamese authorities arrested 59 nationals involved in cross-border fraud.
  • The operation was part of a cooperative effort with Cambodian authorities.
  • Suspects will be transferred to Vietnam for extended investigation.
