The tropical depression, downgraded from Typhoon Kalmaegi, has weakened into a low-pressure system over southern Laos. As of 4 a.m. Friday, the system’s center was positioned at latitude 14.6°N and longitude 106.8°E, with maximum wind speeds under 39 km/h. It is expected to continue west-northwest and dissipate within 12 hours.

Previously, the typhoon made landfall on Thursday night, rapidly weakening into a tropical depression. The storm prompted severe weather reactions, including Force 8 winds with gusts up to Force 10 at Lý Sơn Island in Quảng Ngãi Province. Areas from Đà Nẵng City to Đắk Lắk Province experienced winds mostly between Force 7 and 9, reaching Force 10-11 near the storm center, and gusts hitting Force 14.

Heavy rainfall occurred between Huế City and Khánh Hòa Province, with several areas exceeding 250mm. The rainfall was particularly extreme at Sơn Hội Station (354mm), Trà Thanh (283mm), and Hà Nhe Reservoir (263mm). From Friday to Saturday, additional moderate to heavy rain is expected in regions from Thanh Hóa to northern Quảng Trị with rainfalls of 50-150mm, and isolated incidents surpassing 200mm.

Authorities in Lý Sơn Island, Quảng Ngãi Province, reported three missing men on Thursday evening due to the storm. D.Q.C, aged 44, jumped into the sea after a family dispute, prompting L.V.S, 37, and P.D.Q, 47, to attempt a rescue by boat. Despite pulling C. from the water, strong waves hindered their return to shore.

Search efforts were initiated by the local authorities, deploying the vessel Thành Tâm (VT0035). However, operations were halted around 6 p.m. due to deteriorating sea conditions, with high waves and strong winds complicating the rescue.

Key Takeaways:

  • Typhoon Kalmaegi weakened into a low-pressure system, moving west-northwest.
  • Extreme rainfall and strong winds impacted several Vietnamese provinces.
  • Three men remain missing after rescue attempts were thwarted by harsh conditions.
