Realistically, neither party give a rip about the American people.  Congress and the Senate care about the interests of their donors.  That's a tough reality, but it explains why both parties pretty much ignore the will of the American electorate.  The average person on the street doesn't want to be used as a pawn in US partisan politics, but here we are again.
