Vietnam's banh mi and pho noodle soup have been honored among the top 100 street foods worldwide by TasteAtlas, an international food magazine. The latest ranking, updated last month, was derived from over 82,000 user ratings, with approximately 53,000 deemed legitimate. The recognition highlights the global appreciation of Vietnam's unique culinary offerings.

Banh mi, a quintessential Vietnamese sandwich combining French and local elements, secured the number 10 spot. It typically features a baguette stuffed with meat, pate, pickled vegetables, and herbs. Additionally, the meat and cold cuts banh mi ranked 37th, featuring roasted pork, pork belly, pork sausage, and pate, while the roasted pork belly banh mi placed 48th with its crispy pork.

Pho, another Vietnamese culinary delight, appeared twice on the list. Beef pho, known for its rich broth made from simmered beef bones and spices like cinnamon and star anise, ranked at number 31. This comforting soup is served with noodles and topped with beef slices and herbs. The traditional version of pho, described as "Vietnam’s comfort food and a way of life," was listed at number 51, showcasing the differences between the clear, mild northern pho and the herb-rich, fuller southern pho.

Taking the top position this year was Lanzhou lamian from China, known for its delicate hand-pulled noodles and beef broth. It was closely followed by Chinese guotie, pan-fried dumplings filled with pork and cabbage, and Mexican birria tacos, featuring tortillas with slow-cooked beef and cheese. These top rankings reflect the diverse and rich traditions of street food culture around the world.

Key Takeaways:

  • Vietnam's banh mi and pho earned spots in the top 100 street foods globally.
  • A mixed blend of French and local influences helped banh mi achieve high recognition.
  • Pho's two appearances highlight its comfort food status in Vietnamese cuisine.
