Is Money the 'be all and end all' in Thailand?

I've never thought Thais liked white folk.

But the Filipino's certainly appear to.

Just my opinion based on being stationed there (82-85) during my military days, and being previously married to a pinay for 26 years.

Filipinos are mostly receptive / acceptive  of anyone. But there is a saying there "pesos says so".  That was the mentality when the US bases were active, when the Europeans came afterwards dominating the bar/nightclub night life, now the Chinese and Korean influx...so whoever comes in with the $$$.

Again, just my opinion.

funny that.   they use whitening cream on their skin like it's going out of fashion!   Eric.

  • Interesting subject. Thai people I know like to say how much they paid for something. Where I come from its more like how cheap I bought something, how much I saved. Different culture, different

  • If you are low on cash, it becomes the most important thing in the world, anywhere in the world. If you have money, then you can start considering other things.   I don't know where you come

how many are drunk locals?

I once dropped a wad full of hundreds in the middle of New Orleans.

Nobody batted an eye.

I picked it up without being mugged or shot.

Eric.

and in UK i once had someone invade my home and try cut my face open with no money to gain at all
take note of where i stated "certain areas"
you were in the middle of NO, implying in the business area,
which likely has CCTV and people there with money to spend etc etc.

Why is Northern Luzon so dangerous?

Eric.

It's a bit off topic, but briefly, it's far from a major city, and the law of the jungle applies. The government has little control over events in the remote provinces. I've not lived up there myself, as I wouldn't want to, but I heard a lot of horror stories from up there. I lived near Samar, in Letye... plenty of horror stories from there too. I've been extorted by police in PI too, for 100s of thousands. I won't be going back there. You're safest in the big cities, as long as you don't walk around too much.

Not that strange virtually every filipino has at least 1-2 family members that work or have worked abroad too. They are much more global orientated. Secondly they have the catholic heritage, believe it or not that makes a big difference too.

I think anywhere in the world you go, where you have 2-3X or even more the average, you can do virtually whatever at anytime. If i go back to my hometown nowadays I also earn above 2X and have lots of free time, it's a complete different experience.

Just sucks as everyone I know needs to work and even schedule a dinner a week upfront.

This applies to literally everywhere these days though.
Especially for anyone out of town.
I do not disagree with your comment
but find dangers can be similar in certain areas, in plenty of countries

You don't have to be very flashy in PI. If you live in a decent house and drive a car, you're already a target. You don't need to be loaded to be a target. It's a lot easier to stand out in PI than in Thailand.

I would note that countries that have an emphasis on money, prestige, and material things are in stark contrast to Western countries where morality and spirituality are by far the most important things.

It seems to me that Money really does talk in the land of smiles.

If you have money here, you live like a king and can literally do anything.

If you are broke, there is no safety net and you have to resort to selling homemade sauces or become a beach vendor in order to stay alive..

I often wonder, are we only tolerated here because of our money, or do the thais genuinely like westerners??

It's a question that rings around my head on a daily basis...

Indeed it isn't a problem for me.

I never flaunt it though, unlike the locals.

I wear basic clothes, have no jewelry of any note and do not own a car.

If so, then you must be close to our worry about bankruptcy.

No need to wish anything. If something is bothering you so much, then it must be a problem for you. Why think about it every day otherwise?

Been their loads (PI) walked around the poorest areas late at night, all very polite and friendly to foreigners.

That doesn't really mean much. By saying the PI is not safe, I'm not saying that everyone will have problems. It's an inherent danger that you won't know until you get in trouble. I survived, too, with only one mobile snatched from my ear and one police extortion incident... and girlfriends having bags snatched in Manila. I wasn't a visitor, but a permanent resident for years, living in a house I bought in Leyte and living with the family. You hear things you won't hear as a casual tourist. I lived for a year in Cavite and Manila, too.

I don't know what areas you were walking around at night, but walking around the poorest areas would suggest places like Tondo, Manila, which would be foolhardy at best. The time I had my phone snatched, I was accosted by a gang who pulled a gun on me. This was Angeles City, the tourist area.

Yep, that's how it works.

I love it ♥️

Where I live in Bangkok, asians dominate the spending power. Most are locals too because I hear them speak when working on their laptops. Foreigners are largely irrelevant - so you get a good feel towards real attitude...and it's been nothing short of wonderful.

Appearance goes a long way here, unlike Pattaya for example. Nobody wears singlets and very few would be seen in flip flops. No gaudy tattoos. Locals steer clear of foreigners there but they love chatting with nice foreigners here.

Majority low-class foreigner areas can be a bit dire to live. Can't blame the locals for only being there for commercial reasons.
