Afternoon Alcohol Ban: Government Sets Six-Month Lifting Trial

Featured Replies

6 month trial?

Yes groups are going to complain about it going away, but if they just made it permanent they'll forget about it all together before the next lottery draw

  • So people can now buy alcohol 2 - 5 PM but can't drink it between those hours?

  • That's what you took from this story?

  • Another half way action.. How can you really give a trial if only a few places and venues are allowed?? Just open it for the whole country and see what the results will be... All because nobody wants

Provincial committees will monitor health, social and economic impacts and submit their findings to the national committee.

No such alcohol bureaucracy across the border here in Cambodia - drink whenever you want to!

A rocking horse has challenged an MP for the return of its brain. My money is on the rocking horse, although the MP has more experience of getting kickbacks.

Not as much as being allowed to drink up to 4am.

Thieves will know that the falang owner is still out at the boozer so can go in and rob his place, and the falang will drive home at 4.00 even more pi55ed.

"Existing zoning regulations under the Act will remain unchanged throughout the period." So am I reading this right and this will apply only for already designated zones and not all of Thailand? Very disappointed but not surprised. I think I actually said i woner if this would be the case on a previous thread. Midnight cut off is ridiculous. This will go zero way to increasing tourism. The ridiculous prohibition law should be scrapped nation wide.

No, it means that other zoning limits still apply (even between 2pm - 5pm) e.g. can't sell alocohol within 300m of educational institutes and closing times will still be based on the act (according to zoning regulations etc. However, you now will be able to buy a beer at 7/11 supermarkets at anytime after 11:00 across the country.

Complete and utter shambles as always: half a law not enforced, another half of another law maybe enforced here but not there for obscure reasons, anything possible but nothing confirmed and all experimental anyway so all may change again next week or the week after ...

Thais love complexity (just look at their architecture - Thai Gothic).

Complexity in government and administration means that anyone who has money or influence can do absolutely anything they like without fear of interference. Everyone else must live in fear & trembling before mysterious rules and laws that noone understands and that may or may not be enforced according to the whims of someone more important.

Now then don't knock it    Its a Thai solution to a Thai problem , everybody concerned knows the law is ridiculous and seldom even enforced, It was only ever the large supermarkets and 7/11 that observed the retail regs ,none of the other retail outlets observed it,

Whilst I am sure some police have selectively enforced the afternoon drinking laws , presumably as "leverage" on  establishments who are not "playing ball"  I have never heard of any official national  crackdowns on the issue, have you ?

That in itself  tells us all we need to know,   IE.  Nobody really cared, except a tiny number of anti alcohol activists, and a similar number of expats on here, some of whom seem to see it as an infringement on their  basic human rights , others seem rather over concerned about the negative effects on ("quality"? ) tourism, others just don't really understand how things work here and are a bit uncomfortable "breaking the law"

The rest of us just deal with it Thai style and simply carry on regardless, walk past any Thai "restaurant" mid afternoon and where there are groups of Thais sat together they will invariably be drinking alcohol and generally it won't be beer, these are not alcoholics or social miscreants just normal people often local authority employees, (or even police lol)  enjoying an extended lunch.

Whatever the original  reason for the afternoon ban ,I imagine whoever was responsible for it was not very popular, but presumably influential enough, to ensure that his no doubt well intended ,but rather stupid law was placed on the statute book

Now common sense has prevailed, and the rule rescinded,  the  concern and outrage from the anti alcohol lobby as expected is loud and clear, but whilst they are are very vocal ,they  are in fact actually only  a tiny minority, however ,  no doubt there are a few "people of status" amongst them so they can't really be ignored. loss of face an all that

So the Thai solution, scrap the law, but with a few qualifications to appease the puritans, so we end up with a six month trial period with close monitoring for potential problems, there will probably be a few committees formed, and a few "good lunches" enjoyed as a consequence. but its pretty much a forgone conclusion that in 6 months time it will all be forgotten about

People's lives here are without doubt  governed to a certain extent by the whims of influential, wealthy  but  often rather stupid people, however its not much different in the west , its just a lot more secretive and sinister, who knows what they discuss at places like Davos when unelected yet nevertheless very influential  organisations like the WEF get together,?

I know where I would rather be, but how long are we safe from all that for ?  its only the so called "dinosaurs" here amongst the political elite that will try to  keep organisations like the WEF and the OECD at bay Once these young upstart so called peoples  champions of democracy  eventually take over it will be game over , just like in the west   The recent tax scare is just the start, same goes for recent banking problems whether with Thai banks or those back home,   people need to be careful what they wish for, and whist most will not agree I personally think a conservative  nationalist government even a military one is not the worst thing that could happen
