What's the highest point in Thailand not inside a national park?

Featured Replies

I tried asking AI, and it gave me the brilliant answer that the highest point in Thailand is Doi Inthanon, which is inside a national park, therefore there is no highest point which is not inside a national park. If I wanted an answer that was technically correct but utterly devoid of information I would have asked the government.

So I thought I would ask the forum here. Does anyone know the highest, coldest spot in the country that doesn't cost money to visit?

The highest peak in Thailand not located in a national park is Khao Kacheu La, although its exact location and height are not as widely documented as those of peaks inside national parks. While Doi Inthanon is Thailand's highest peak, it is within a national park, making it unsuitable for this query.

  • Khao Kacheu La: This is the highest peak in Thailand that is not located within a national park.

Sometimes a differently worded question can give the result one needs. I searched "highest peaks in Thailand, but not inside a national park"

Coldest is going to be Northern, obviously.   Consider a few things, even the highest peaks, aren't exactly high, though not necessarily a bad thing.

Also think about access to, any areas around those peaks.  Another couple hundred meters isn't going to matter to much difference, view or temp wise.  Access & a nice view being more important.

There's more than a few viewpoint 'villages' scattered all over TH, especially up North, for like minded people.

Searching 'viewpoints' in Gmaps will point out many of them.  Some, most, very popular, so weekdays may be better to avoid crowds, and better pricing.

Phu Chi Fa, Chiang Rai is a well known area, hotels with views.  Many more like in scattered all over.

Where are you located now ?  How cold do you want it, as it gets down to single digits a couple months of the year.

Thanks. Looks like a great place, but no practical access to it. In my younger years I might have tried it, but the only reviews I can find are hikers referring to it as "conquering". That doesn't bode well for my out of shape self.

In Bangkok now. Looking for a short getaway as cold as I can possibly get.

How far do you want to travel, as Phu Chi Fa isn't exactly close.

Khao Kho, Phetchabun has some nice viewpoints, and gets quite chilly at times, especially if you've been in TH a while and acclimated to warmer temps.  Less tha 6 hrs away from T21 Asok.

Kanchanaburi, same, 3 ish hours away, unless going up to Mon Bridge, then add a few more hours.

There's always Pak Chong & Khao Yai area, though would be my last choice.  Never much of a fan.

Suan Phaeng, Ratchaburi had some nice views, and around the 3 hr mark.  View from room at one hotel.  Not high overlooking valley, but nice enough.

Another hotel, same area, more of a "viewpoint".   May be better accommodation options, as we need pet friendly, and limits our choices.

Khao Kho, Phetchabun, further away ...

Hillside hotel @ Kanchanaburi, 22 Nov, so not exactly chilly yet ...

I don't know about their height but Phu Rua along with Phukradeung (both in national  parks) are one of, if not the coldest in Loei Province

Doi Ang Khang, about 135km west of Chiang Rai by car, is technically a National Park.  However, you do not have to pay to drive in, only have to pay if camping.  At least not when I went there about 6 years ago.  There is only a checkpoint looking for border-crossers.  I camped there for New Years Eve at that time and because it was so mobbed with people we didn't have to pay as we didn't even get a site in the camping area. I suspect at normal times it's quite empty.

Anyways, this seems to be what you're after.  You can drive right up, sit and chill, literally and figuratively, only steps from your car.  Sunrise was well worth the effort.

It was down to 3 degrees Celsius on that New Years Eve.  I imagine it is regularly at single digit temps during December to January as it's above 1700m elevation.

Doi Ang Khang is inside a national park BUT there are no entry fees to be paid to access it. The camp site near the summit is around 1800 metres above sea level.

Khao Kacheu La is 400 metres LOWER than Doi Inthanon - you would accept this so you don't have to pay the 250 baht entrance fee?

Phu Thap Boek is fairly high at 1700m. We just drove up and I believe you pass through part of a national park but there was no entrance as such. If there had been we would have turned back, it is a hairpin road and my wife hated it. We went in Sept under the WTT scheme and it was perishing and misty at the top, was about to come down again when the clouds started to break and ended up with a terrific view. Well worth a visit, but at a better time of year.

The park entrance is at the end of the road and on top of the mountain.

May well be the case bu I cannot remember passing through any checkpoint and having to pay. What is the charge?

I wonder if there was an exemption with it being covid.

Highest point in Chiangmai ?

BritMan 2's  backyard ?

You can walk up doi luang elevation ~1700m, from phayao on a trail ~5km in the national park and no one will charge you.
