You can get visas at the borders.....

Yes you can take a rented car across...declare your intentions to the rental company first

You will get a new 30 day visa on re-entry

You will be able to get a visa at the border, 20 USD for Cambodia, around 35 USD for Laos, your thai girlfirend is visa free for Laos, and needs to purchase a visa for Cambodia at USD20.

Don't bother to take a car into Laos, expensive and not worth the hassle.

Regarding the visa excempt, you do know that you need proof of onward travel, within 30 days, since you intend on leaving 6 weeks later. That might be a problem, most importantly with your airline. Get aroud it by either fly to cambodia (cheap to PP) or get a tourist visa beforehand (for Thailand).

Can you please confirm Thais need to purchase a visa for Cambodia.

My wife and I will be traveling there soon with a team from her work. She’s assured me she doesn’t need a visa.

I also found this on the net. Dated August 2000

"The Cambodian Government has unveiled visa-free travel arrangements with the following Asean countries: Brunei, Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia (Singaporean and Indonesian are not exempted and required visa)"
